Last year, the combined forces of Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), and Skywalker Sound created a new laboratory dedicated to working on immersive experiences in the "Star Wars" universe.
On Monday, we finally got our first look at what this ILMxLAB team is working on.
For those unfamiliar with ILM, Industrial Light & Magic was Lucasfilm's in-house special effects department that was tasked with creating visual effects no one had ever seen before for the first "Star Wars" movie. Since then, ILM has produced special effects for nearly 300 films, including all of the "Star Wars" films, all the Marvel superhero movies, the "Transformers" and "Men in Black" movies, and countless others.
Now, ILM's new "immersive entertainment" laboratory is working on experiences in virtual reality and augmented reality. Here's your first look at how this groundbreaking team is taking the "Star Wars" franchise to new heights.
First, let's take a quick look at the team's first VR experience, called "Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine."
It requires the HTC Vive virtual reality headset and a pair of hand controllers.
The brief teaser for "Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine" shows some familiar items from the original "Star Wars" trilogy, like Han Solo's Millennium Falcon coming in for a landing.
