Warning: There are spoilers ahead if you have not seen "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
One of the most talked about scenes in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" happened when Rey touched Luke's old lightsaber for the first time and she was catapulted into a series of jarring visions. Her mysterious "Force vision" sequence seemed to be a flashback of sorts, since we actually caught a glimpse of her younger self.
Not only was the vision revealing about Rey's past, but it also left us with a lot of questions. A few mysterious voices could be heard in the background of the chaotic visions. We knew Ewan McGregor reprised his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi to record lines. His voice was later mixed with the late Alec Guinness' who played the original Kenobi to make it into the film.
Frank Oz (Yoda) was supposed to have dialogue, too. However, hearing Yoda over the noise of the visions was nearly impossible to do in a crowded theater.
Tech Insider received a review copy of the Blu-ray ahead of the film's home release April 5. As we've been going through the features, we naturally decided to turn on subtitles for this important scene. Now, it's very clear who's saying what.
Let's walk through the visions, now with added dialogue for context.
As soon as Rey touches the lightsaber, she screams as the world around her drops away and she is suddenly in a blue-lit hallway. As some have pointed out, it looks like she's in Cloud City during the dramatic fight between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in "The Empire Strikes Back."
Her younger self can be heard, yelling "no!" in an echoing voice.
Rey turns, and begins walking down the hallway.
Here's when Yoda speaks for the first time. "Its energy ..." he says, trailing off. Rey breaks into a run as the hall turns sideways, knocking her into a new setting. Yoda speaks again: "... surrounds us ..."
An unidentified man then yells "No!"(It's worth noting that it seems like this person may be Luke screaming out in response to the slaughter of padawan we see in forthcoming scenes.)
Rey looks up, and the camera pans over to R2-D2 next to a hooded person (we presume this is Luke). Yoda says: "... and binds us ..."
The person places a robotic hand onto the droid's side, and then the scene shifts again. Rey is now crouched on the muddy ground and rain is pouring down as she turns her head in time to see a man stabbed through the back with a red lightsaber. The man screams.
Rey stands up and begins backing away. Obi-Wan speaks for the first time: "The Force will be ..."
The frame zooms out to reveal Rey standing in front of a group of men: the Knights of Ren, led by Kylo. The young sith lord turns to look at Rey, and she backs away right as the scene changes again.
Now she's in the desert of Jakku, watching as her younger self is dragged by the arm while she looks to the sky and screams. The little Rey yells: "No! Come back!"
Unkar, the junkboss of Jakku who is dragging her away, says "Quiet girl."
Young Rey screams "No!" again, as present-day Rey turns to see what her younger self is looking at. It's a ship flying away, and the sky turns from blue to black and a red light beams outwards.
The scene changes again, and Rey is in a snowy forest.
As Rey turns and begins running, Obi-Wan calls out "Rey?"
Kylo Ren steps out from behind a tree, activating his lightsaber. Rey falls backwards in fright, and Obi-Wan speaks for a final time: "These are your first steps."
As his voice fades, Rey looks around and she's back in the storage area where she first found the lightsaber.
So — there we have it. The full vision sequence with every bit of dialogue you were probably straining to hear in theaters. Make what you will of the mysterious inclusion of both Yoda and Obi-Wan discussing the Force, but it's clear Rey is a powerful protagonist in this new trilogy.
Here's all of that dialogue together for easy reading:
Young Rey: (Echoing) No!
Yoda: (Echoing) Its energy...
Yoda: ...surrounds us...
Man: (Echoing) No!
Yoda: ...and binds us...
(Man screams)
Obi-Wan: The Force will be...
Young Rey: (Echoing) No! Come back!
Unkar: Quiet, girl.
Young Rey: No!
Obi-Wan: Rey?
Obi-Wan: These are your first steps.
The Blu-ray edition of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will available in stores on April 5. "The Force Awakens" will be available on digital HD April 1.
