The INSIDER Summary:

  • Lucasfilm released the first teaser poster for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi."
  • It shows Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren faces split down the middle by a lightsaber held by Rey.
  • The artwork looks like a remix of posters for "A New Hope" and "Revenge of the Jedi," before it was renamed "The Return of the Jedi."

Disney and Lucasfilm released the first teaser poster for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," and if you're a fan of the series it looks awfully familiar.

Disney unveiled the first poster at "Star Wars: Celebration" in Orlando, Florida Friday morning.

Take a look at it.

The poster shows Luke Skywalker, his nephew Kylo Ren, and Rey front and center. Luke and his nephew's faces are split down the middle by, what we presume is, Luke's original blue lightsaber that Rey acquired in "The Force Awakens."

If you started getting nostalgic vibes, it's because it feels like a partial homage to one of the posters for the original "Star Wars" film.

Take a look:

In the poster, Luke is brandishing the lightsaber against the looming presence of Darth Vader, who we later learn is his father. Is "The Last Jedi" trailer trying to hint that Rey is the source of hope for the galaxy not only against Kylo Ren, but also Luke Skywalker? Skywalker, like Vader, is also the largest figure on the new teaser poster. Is it also suggesting a parental relationship between Skywalker and Rey? We'll have to wait to find out.

Here are the two side by side.

But that's not the only poster "The Last Jedi" resembles. It also looks like the original poster for "Star Wars: Episode VI," back when it was called "Revenge of the Jedi." The title was changed weeks before the film's release because creator George Lucas pointed out that it's against the Jedi way for them to seek revenge. It was later renamed "Return of the Jedi."

The poster for "Revenge of the Jedi" is shrouded in red.

The only hint of light comes from a lightsaber battle between Luke and Darth Vader, creating a purple hue, similar to the one seen at the center of "The Last Jedi" poster. Both "The Last Jedi" and "Empire Strikes Back" are the second films in "Star Wars" trilogies.

Shortly after unveiling the new poster, Disney and Lucasfilm debuted the first trailer for "The Last Jedi." You can view it here. "The Last Jedi" will be in theaters this December.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated "Revenge of the Jedi" was the original title for "Empire Strikes Back."
