- A Han Solo spin-off movie is coming to theaters May 25.
- The first reactions hit the web after the film's world premiere Thursday night.
- Most agree it's a good time.
- Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover are solid as the leads.
- Critics admit it's a little slow to start and has "a few rough edges," which may be a result of the movie changing directors during filmmaking.
"Star Wars" fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The first reactions are in for the Han Solo spin-off movie and they're good. Very good.
Fans were worried after original directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord left the movie during filming due to "creative differences." Ron Howard stepped in to complete the project. According to the Wall Street Journal, there was a lot of drama behind-the-scenes. A report from Vulture suggested the lead, Alden Ehrenreich, needed an acting coach to get through the movie. Supposedly, the script was "unworkable."
Well, it seems like none of that may have mattered too much.
"Solo: A Star Wars" held its world premiere in Los Angeles Thursday night and fans and critics immediately started sharing their thoughts about the movie, which praise not only Donald Glover, but also the new Han Solo himself, Alden Ehrenreich.
There are a few concerns about a slow start to the film, but overall the early consensus is that "Solo" is good. The movie follows a younger Han Solo when he first meets Lando Calrissian (Glover) and acquires the famed Millennium Falcon.
If you were worried about Ehrenreich as Solo, don't be.
Apparently, he's "the real deal."
Alden Ehrenreich is the real deal, Thandie Newton is who I want to be when I grow up, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s L3... well we’ll talk about that later. 😃 #SoloAStarWarsStory

Wow. Just come out of #SoloAStarWarsStory and can confirm it’s kinda a blast. @donaldglover was as perfect as expected, but Alden Ehrenreich has swagger to match, and spare.

Glover's Lando Calrissian is just as good as you imagined.
Yes, Lando rules. But you already knew that. #Solopic.twitter.com/iXSK5uPdYs

The first act of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY can be hit and miss clunky. But once Donald Glover's Lando shows up (who is legit fantastic) and the Kessel Run heist plot kicks in, it's a whole lot of fun. (And those who've always wanted a Han and Chewbacca shower scene are in luck.)

I loved #SoloAStarWarsStory so much. It’s a western. A caper. Funny with so much heart. It’s got so much surprises that fans are going to love. Donald Glover is charming x1000. Alden Ehrenreich is a great #HanSolo and just know I’ve been saying this for years! Fave new #StarWars.

Move aside, BB-8. Your new favorite "Star Wars" character may be L3.
#SoloAStarWarsStory is reaaaaalllly good. Fun as hell. It’s a straight intergalactic heist movie, kind of refreshing to see a Star Wars movie w/o a Death Star or the rebellion’s fate at stake. Alden Ehrenreich is super impressive as Han, but L3 might be my favorite new character.

While there was a lot to enjoy, not everyone was the biggest fan.
You may be left wondering if this was the "Star Wars" movie we needed.
There’s some fun to be had with #SoloAStarWarsStory. Ehrenreich was solid and really enjoyed Glover and Waller-Bridge as L3, but not convinced we needed a young Han Solo movie. Was really hoping for higher stakes, more energy and depth.

#Solo thoughts: Blast.💥 Like the Falcon, a few rough edges getting there, but I thought @RealRonHoward pulled it off as neatly as a Wookiee removes arms.

#SoloAStarWarsStory was a mostly fun adventure and solid performances but with a predictable story. Never will be one of my favorite #StarWars movies but I enjoyed enough of it.

#SoloAStarWarsStory: It takes a bit for it to find its feet and for AE to turn on enough charm to make you forget he’s not HF. But once it kicks into its hey-let’s-make-a-crew and yes-also-do-a-heist stuff, it totally flies.

Overall, the movie sounds like a good time.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is a goddamn delight. It’s a non-stop adventure packed with way more emotion than your expecting. You’ll have a smile on your face the whole time and leave eager for more. pic.twitter.com/fOsF7Tr95L

#Solo feels surprisingly unlike any Star Wars movie before, yet perfectly captures the tone, adventure, characters and humor of the #StarWars franchise. Also, I need a Lando movie in my life.

SOLO was SO much better than I was expecting! It balanced fan service w/ meaningful storytelling, and it’s an absolute blast. Full of Easter eggs & deep cut references. The cast oozed charisma, especially Donald Glover as Lando & Phoebe Waller-Bridge as L3-37. #HanSolo#StarWarspic.twitter.com/xzXNWleU15
