Here's An Explanation For Everything You See In The New 'Star Wars' Trailer

The new Star Wars trailer is here!

For the uninitiated, let's catch up.

This movie is called "Star Wars: Episode VII." The subtitle is "The Force Awakens." The story takes place approximately 30 years after "Return of the Jedi," the third movie in the original trilogy that ended with the death of Darth Vader. (You know, the trilogy starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill.)

Got all that? Now let's break down "The Force Awakens" trailer.

We start with a look at the landscape of Tatooine, the desert planet where Luke Skywalker grew up. A menacing-sounding voiceover says "There's been an awakening. Have you felt it?"

the force awakens tattooine

Then this guy pops up from the bottom of the frame. Who is he? We don't know! He's a new character, and his name hasn't been revealed yet. He's played by an actor named John Boyega. Most speculate Boyega's character will be the new hero of the next three Star Wars films. This will probably be a coming of age tale about how Boyega's character learns to be a Jedi, just like Luke Skywalker learned in the original trilogy.

john boyega in storm trooper uniform

What's that outfit he's wearing? It's a storm trooper uniform. Boyega looks around. He's nervous, sweaty, and panicked. If we had to speculate, we'd say Boyega somehow got tangled up with the bad guys and managed to escape to Tatooine.

john boyega storm trooper uniform

The trailer then cuts to a shot of this cute little droid. He's probably not very important to the plot, but it does show director JJ Abrams will include the whimsical background characters that made the original trilogy so delightful.

cute droid star wars episode vii trailer

Then things get dark. The stormtroopers are back! We see them in the cargo hold of a ship. The camera is shaky and dramatic as they charge their blaster rifles. It seems like even though Luke Skywalker and crew defeated the Empire in "Return of the Jedi," some loyal factions remain all these years later.

storm troopers star wars episode vii

Here's a look at the stormtrooper blaster rifle.

stormtrooper blaster rifle star wars episode vii

The stormtroopers land on a dark and stormy planet, ready for some sort of battle. (We get another look at this planet a few more seconds into the trailer.)

storm troopers get off ship star wars episode vii

Next, we get a shot of this woman. Who is she? Again, we have no idea! But she's played by Daisy Ridley. There's a good chance she's the other lead of the film along with Boyega.

daisy ridley star wars episode vii trailer

If we had to guess, the Ridley and Boyega characters will probably be each other's love interests. Star Wars movies like to put two characters into impossible situations and watch them fall in love. Think back to how Han Solo and Leia got together in the original trilogy.

star wars luke leia han solo

Ridley rides away on this hovercraft thing. She's also on Tatooine, so this is probably when her character will meet Boyega's character.

star wars episode vii tatooine hovercraft

Next, the trailer cuts to this X-Wing pilot. See that symbol on his helmet? It's the Rebel Insignia, the symbol all the good guys wore in the original trilogy when they were fighting the Empire. We're not sure who this character is, but it's clear he's a good dude.

x-wing pilot star wars episode vii trailer

Holy smokes! Look at those X-Wings fly over the water! We've never seen this planet in a Star Wars movie before, but it looks like it's the stage for a big aerial battle. On the other hand, it could be the moon of Yavin, where the Rebels blew up the first Death Star in the first Star Wars movie.

x-wings flying over the water star wars episode vii trailer

Now things get crazy. We see this dark cloaked figure slinking through a snowy forest. This may be the same planet the stormtroopers landed on earlier in the trailer. The voiceover comes back and says, "The dark side..." Who is he? You guessed it. We have no idea.

sith star wars episode vii trailer

He has a red lightsaber! That means he's definitely a bad guy. In Star Wars, the Sith, the followers of the Dark Side of the Force, only use red lightsabers. Most think actor Adam Driver is playing the villain in the movie, so this is probably him.

But this is no ordinary lightsaber...

sith lightsaber star wars episode vii

A beat after the main part of the lightsaber ignites, the two side of the hilt do too. It looks like a medieval sword.

sith lightsaber star wars episode vii trailer

The voiceover finishes: "...and the light." The screen goes black for a beat and then we're back on Tatooine with the Millennium Falcon flying through the air doing some crazy maneuvers. The Millennium Falcon is Han Solo's ship from the original trilogy. Ford is already confirmed to be in the new movie, so it's safe to say he's the guy flying the ship.

millennium falcon star wars episode vii trailer

It turns out the Millennium Falcon is trying to escape Tatooine while fighting a bunch of TIE fighters. Remember: TIE fighters are the aircraft the Empire had in the original trilogy.

Now for some wild speculation: It's possible Han Solo was already on Tatooine at the same time as Boyega and Ridley's characters. Maybe they convince him to help them escape. It'd be very similar to the way Han Solo helped Luke Skywalker escape the Empire on Tatooine in the first movie. A nice balance!

star wars episode 7 millennium falcon

And that's it! Finally, we see the title of the movie: "The Force Awakens."

star wars the force awakens

So, what the heck does that title mean? Some more speculation: At the end of the prequel trilogy, the movies that came out in the late 90s/early 2000s that explained how Darth Vader became Darth Vader, almost all of the Jedi were killed by the Empire. In the next trilogy, Luke Skywalker becomes the first of a new generation of Jedi.

In the new trailer, the creepy voiceover guy alludes to a resurgence in the Force, meaning a lot of new potential Jedi and Sith are starting to show up across the galaxy. Boyega's character is likely one of the new Jedi. Driver's character is likely one of the new Sith.

What's missing?

A lot. Remember, Hamill, Fisher, and Ford are all coming back to reprise their original roles. Many have speculated that Hamill's character, Luke Skywalker, will return to teach the new generation of Jedi. Expect him to play the same kind of wise old master that Obi Wan Kenobi was in the very first Star Wars movie.

Other characters like R2-D2, C-3P0, and Chewbacca are also confirmed to be in the new movie. Still, we have no clue who the new characters played by Boyega, Ridley, Driver, and more will be. Here's a look at the new cast:

There's An Easter Egg In The New 'Star Wars' Trailer (DIS)

The trailer for the new Star Wars movie, "The Force Awakens," debuted Friday.

And geeks around the internet have already discovered an Easter egg.

The end of the trailer shows Han Solo's ship, the Millennium Falcon, the same ship he had in the old movies. It looks like this:

millennium falcon star wars episode vii trailer

But upon closer inspection, fans have noticed something different. Let's flash back to this moment in 1983's "Return of the Jedi" when Lando Calrissian is piloting the Falcon through the second Death Star on his way to blow it up.

He knocks off the radar dish at the top of the ship!

The new Star Wars movie takes place about 30 years after that moment. It looks like Han Solo replaced the old circular dish with a rectangular one.

George Lucas Told Mark Hamill About 'Star Wars: Episode VII' In The 1980s

mark hamill 1983 interview star wars

The "Star Wars: Episode VII" trailer premiered Friday online and in theaters.

The film will star newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley while reuniting original cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford.

While we didn't see any of them in the trailer teaser, "Star Wars" creator George Lucas was thinking about Episode VII and beyond back when the original trilogy debuted in the 1970s.

After the trailer launch, Reddit user Dessel posted an interview clip of Mark Hamill from 1983 discussing a potential "Episode VII" that wouldn't be filmed for about three decades.

Lucas "at one time said, 'Would you consider playing an Obi Wan-type character handing Excalibur down to the next generation?'" Hamill said.

Hamill wondered when that sequel would take place.

"At the time he [Lucas] said, 'Oh, around 2011,'" Hamill said.

With "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" set for a 2015 theatrical release, Lucas wasn't that far off.

Watch the clip below.

According to a Time magazine article from March 1978, Lucas originally had plans for up to 12 "Star Wars" films.

Over the years, that number changed. In 1983, Lucas hinted to Time not only about the prequel series that eventually came to be, but also a third trilogy that wouldn't happen until after the '90s.

Via Time's May 23, 1983 issue:

If he does carry the story any further, he will probably go back to the beginning, before these characters were born, and make what he calls a 'prequel,' another trilogy that would explain how the Republic fell. Only after that — and certainly not before the 1990s — would he do the sequel and show what happens to the Star Wars trio after Jedi.

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm Ltd. in 2012 for $4 billion, the Mouse House received Lucas' treatments for the next three "Star Wars" movies

We don't know anything about the plot yet for "Episode VII," but we could easily see Hamill play an older Jedi similar to Alec Guinness in the original trilogy.

How Science Fiction Obscures The Horrifying Realities Of War

$
0

carrie fisher mark hamill star warsEveryone likes watching an epic sci-fi battle. But whether it’s Star Trek’s Federation versus the Borg, Battlestar Galactica versus the Cylons, or the Rebel Alliance versus the Empire, most veterans are left wondering, “It’s like a thousand years in the future. Why are they fighting like it’s the Bronze Age or something?”

One might think that these futuristic battles are just idle fun. In a way, they are. They allow us to fantasize about how we wish war actually was — straightforward battles between good and evil, and not the inhuman, horrific spectacle as it actually is.

Nonetheless, science fiction shapes the way the public looks at war today.

Pop culture shapes the subconscious, which shapes public consciousness. Public “knowledge” of war comes in more ways than we realize. Most of the biggest onscreen battles in recent years have been science-fiction. More often than not, they ignore military innovation, real warfare strategy, and the grim reality of loss of life in battle.

The last manned fighter planes that will ever be produced are being manufactured right now. Even with that, pilots in Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars are still dueling at short range as though it was World War II. Larger spaceships (I’m looking at you, Millennium Falcon) even have bubble turrets, with gunners swiveling around like on a B-17.

Today’s fighters push the gravitational limits of the human body, even though they usually travel at subsonic speeds on somewhat predictable paths. In fictional space battles, pilots travel much faster, while twisting in multiple axes, which would make any meat sack pass out and die whether they’re the male Starbuck or the much more popular female version.

Even today, most aerial engagements occur at the edge of visual range. But if you look at sci-fi battles, the pilots are close enough to flip the bird at their opponents.

The big starships are even worse, though. They face off like sailing ships of the 18th century, harkening back to days of yore. Star Trek often has starships facing each other at close range, making everyone think, “That Admiral Nelson was really on to something with those sailing ships and broadside cannon battles!”

Battlestar GalacticaWhile Star Trek is the archetype, Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars also feature ships facing off like the British against the French at Trafalgar.

After traveling billions of miles and using entire solar systems as their battlegrounds, they fight to the death at ranges of a few feet. Even ramming other ships, a tactic not used widely since the Age of Sail, is a prime feature of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the 2009 Star Trek film, Babylon 5, and Stargate: SG-1.

When spaceships attack those on the ground, they strafe with cannons. In The Avengers, The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars, the original Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Firefly, and others, they travel across the galaxy or between dimensions in advanced spaceships. Then they send those sophisticated craft down to the surface to shoot at individual people with what are basically machine guns.

Strafing is used today, but it’s used to reduce collateral damage — which is the exact opposite of what these aliens want to do. If you want to kill everyone, you use something else, like hydrogen bombs, a weapon we already have in the present day. If your goal is to wipe out a civilization in one fell swoop, gunning down civilians one at a time is going to take a while.

On the ground, troops in the year 3099 still fight like it’s 1899. In Starship Troopers, Dune, and most notably, every single Star Wars movie, the human wave rules the battlefield. If it weren’t for all the aliens running around, it would look like the Battle of Gettysburg.

When weaponry was less advanced, this was a pretty good idea. A bow or a muzzleloader takes a while to get ready, and as the Westerns say, “You can’t shoot us all.” In 1914, the world figured out quickly that machine guns had rendered that tactic obsolete. Actually, it took about four years of horror in the trenches, but eventually they got it right.

With anything better than a musket on the other side, rushing into battle shoulder-to-shoulder is just a very orderly means of committing mass suicide. Why are Wookie soldiers fighting the Sith’s clone troops with crossbows when they could easily be bombed by any of the dozens of aircraft flying around or mowed down by the troops defending from prepared positions?

Why are the mobile infantry of Starship Troopers executing frontal assaults against the “bugs” when the enemy was decimating dozens of spaceships in orbit just a few minutes earlier? Battles for distant planets look like the Battle of the Somme — if the Germans had lasers, couldn’t hit anything, and France was the size of a phone booth.

General David Petraeus didn’t personally kill Osama bin Laden. Why does “General” Han Solo lead a squad to take out the shield generator? His friends Admiral Akbar and General Calrissian, along with the rest of the rebel command structure, are above, fighting in a short-range gun battle with Imperial Star Destroyers.

star trek into darkness KirkCaptains Kirk and Picard on Star Trek are one-man SEAL teams fighting the enemy whenever they decide to take a break from their real jobs commanding starships, even though they have crews of literally several hundred other people better suited to fighting than the ship’s captain.

And while we’re talking about it, what’s going on with space invasions? The last opposed beach landing was at Inchon, over 60 years ago. Even that site was picked to avoid the heart of enemy defenses. Amphibious assaults in World War II were successful, but at a huge price. Helicopter tactics have changed to avoid hot landing zones. With most helicopters running over $20 million a pop, they aren’t thrown out lightly. The same is true for amphibious ships. Who knows how much a spaceship costs?

You wouldn’t know by looking at Starship Troopers, Avatar, or Star Wars: Episode II. They drop in from space in fragile, helicopter-type vehicles, directly into the enemy defenses. They can literally land anywhere else on the planet, but they choose to land right in front of enemy laser cannon.

Amphibious landings aren’t that common in science fiction, probably because space isn’t known for beaches, but in Star Wars: Episode III, Wookies attack the beaches like a hairy version of Saving Private Ryan. They may look like dirty hippies, but we know they can fly — Chewbacca is Han Solo’s co-pilot, for crying out loud. Why do they drive slow-moving watercraft directly onto an enemy beach instead of landing, well, anywhere else on the entire planet?

And those troops, waving their rifles around, what about them? Looked at any pictures of Marines and soldiers in Afghanistan lately? You might have noticed that every single one of them had a scope on the top of his rifle. If you looked at similar footage of troops in Vietnam, or even Desert Storm, you’d have seen only a few, usually with snipers or other special troops. One of the biggest changes in war over the past decade has been the near-universal adoption of combat optics.

So why is everyone in every sci-fi movie, just waving his laser rifle around, not even aiming his weapon? In Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, Starship Troopers, well, let’s just say all of them — no one has a scope. Hell, if they even have old-fashioned iron sights, they aren’t even using them. Might explain why those Stormtroopers can’t hit anything.

Probably the biggest disservice though, is portraying death as completely cost free, both to the attacker and the attacked.

Princess Leia personally witnessed the destruction of her entire planet — something that could be considered the Holocaust, the Mongol invasion, and Stalin’s purges put together and multiplied by a thousand — yet is nonchalantly kissing her brother on Hoth a few weeks later.

Luke single-handedly took out a small planet’s worth of Imperials on the Death Star. Sure, he probably feels justified in killing the Stormtroopers, but even he has to feel a twinge of guilt having wasted probably hundreds of innocent space janitors along with them.

The day Luke Skywalker is shown talking in a veterans advocacy group about the trauma of losing his arm fighting his own father in hand-to-hand combat, maybe that will be the day we know the public has finally abandoned the illusion that war is painless or glorious.

Stephen Colbert Explains Why The Controversial New 'Star Wars' Lightsaber Is 'Perfect'

star wars the force awakens sith

When the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” teaser trailer premiered it showed off a new three-pronged lightsaber, igniting a flurry of fans to equally defend and denounce the design.

The design is meant to protect a user's hand from opponent's lightsaber attacks. However, the argument from some fans is that those tiny blades aren’t going to do much protecting. They could easily be hacked off by other lightsabers.

star wars episode 7 lightsaber issue

The Verge wrote a lengthy geek-tastic interpretation of the flawed design while proposing a better one with mini side lightsabers at 45-degree angles. The design is similar to other lightsabers in the "Star Wars" canon.

Here's how a fan envisions it:

star wars episode 7 lightsaber fan made

Not so fast, haters.

Self-proclaimed "Star Wars" fanatic Stephen Colbert is upset by all the flak the new lightsaber is receiving. So he elaborately broke down on "The Colbert Report" why the new lightsaber was a "perfect" design.

stephen colbert lightsaber

Colbert explains:

Sadly, there are some stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herders out there who aren’t thrilled with the new Jedi weapon. They say if these things are supposed to protect your hands like sword hilts, it wouldn’t work because the first time you cross lightsabers and it slid down to the bottom of the blade your opponent’s lightsaber would chop through the little side sabers and take off your hand.

the colbert report lightsaber

"Well, I say it’s a perfect design," Colbert said. "Here’s how it works. I’ve done my analysis."

stephen colbert star wars lightsaber

"People think it’s actually three different plasma streams, but it's all one," Colbert says. "The long beam right here comes out and the two smaller beams at the bottom, they're still attached to it. They don’t start where the little metal hilt ends, OK? They're attached to the other beam inside. The metal hilts are just casings around the little beams to protect your hand. Even if someone slices through the metal, they're going to hit the beam right there. Any padawan knows that."

Colbert also had a retort for fans who still refused to believe him.

"Now, I know what you're thinking," Colbert said. "You're saying, 'But Stephen, in the trailer the first light beam comes out before the other two. How could it all be one beam?'"

star wars episode 7 lightsaber

"It's simple," he said. "You just need three focusing crystal activators to split the plasma into perpendicular blade energy channels."

All the galactic credits to Colbert.

Here's When We May See The Next 'Star Wars' Trailer

$

john boyega star wars episode 7Star Wars: The Force Awakens has proven to be one of the biggest trailer debuts of all time, with the 88 second sneak peek racking up over 40 million views in a record number of days.

Fans just can't get enough of John Boyega in his Stormtrooper outfit and Daisy Ridley setting off on her desert speeder. Everyone already wants more! But when will that happen?

According to /film, we should see the second Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer debut with Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1. But we may see a second teaser before that, possibly during next year's Super Bowl.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still a little over a year away, and most films don't usually debut their first teaser trailer until six months away from release. But Star Wars is a unique franchise, and its possible that we will be given a few more tiny glimpses at the movie as we approach the December 18, 2015 premiere. But we won't get a full-length trailer until at least this spring, which will be 8 months out from Star Wars: The Force Awakens actually being on theaters screens.

While neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have confirmed that the next Star Wars: The Force Awakens will debut with Avengers: Age of Ultron, it does make the most sense. The Marvel sequel is Disney's second largest film of 2015, and it has crossover appeal. The same trailer will also likely play with Disney's Tomorrowland, which debuts a few weeks later in May.

/film speculates that, since iTunes is calling the recently released Star Wars: The Force Awakens footage 'First Teaser' that a second and maybe even third teaser may appear before a full trailer in May. Perhaps a second look will arrive with Into the Woods on Christmas Day? Though that seems unlikely. The biggest chance we have of seeing more from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is during the Super Bowl on February 1, especially since Disney has a strong relationship with the broadcast. What do you think? Is it too soon to start wondering when we'll get the next batch of footage?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes to theaters December 18th, 2015 and stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

Avengers: Age of Ultron comes to theaters May 1st, 2015 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Motion-Capture Master Andy Serkis May Play 2 Characters In 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

andy_serkis

While neither Disney nor Lucasfilm will confirm Andy Serkis as the narrator of theStar Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer, both Hit fix and Collider revealed it was the actor over the weekend. Now, Good Morning America has also backed up these reports, though they refused to give up their source. While Andy Serkis is quite clearly the voice we hear, we still know little to nothing about his character. Or characters, as Jedi News reports this morning. If we're to believe this latest rumor,Andy Serkis has dual roles in the anticipate sequel.

It has long been speculated that Andy Serkis will play a motion capture character inStar Wars: The Force Awakens. The actor is famous for his mo-cap work, pioneering the performance enhancing technology with his groundbreaking role as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He has gone onto perfect the new art form as Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and even helped other actors with their performances in next summer's Avengers: Age of UltronJedi News claims that he will also be donning a motion-capture suit for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. About this first character, they reveal:

"[Andy Serkis will lead] a group of unbelievably athletic and acrobatic motion capture characters."

The other actors in this group are said to include parkour expect Pip Anderson and actress Crystal Clarke. While no other details about this group have been revealed, it is stated that Andy Serkis will also appear as himself in a role that has ties to Daisy Ridley's character:

"[Andy Serkis also has a] pivotal role in the first act story arc that entwines with Daisy Ridley's backstory. [This storyline] may have more to it than it seems in the first instance."

Jedi News is quick to point out that none of this has been confirmed by the studio. There is speculation that, while the voice in the trailer sounds rather ominous, Andy Serkis is actually playing a new Yoda-like character who has been in hiding. It is also being rumored that Andy Serkis's motion-capture company is pioneering a way for actors to interact with on-set-animatronics that is similar to mo-cap, which will revolutionize the entire VFX industry. Is any of this true? We'll have to wait and find out.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes to theaters December 18th, 2015 and stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

The "Star Wars: Episode VII" trailer has now been watched over 60 million times and has been parodied numerous times.

But it turns out "Star Wars" creator George Lucas still hasn't watched the 88-second teaser trailer.

Page Six reports when they asked Lucas his thoughts on the trailer recently he said he didn't know anything about it.

"I haven't seen it yet," Lucas said.

Lucas said he hadn't watched the trailer because "it's not in the movie theater. I like going to the movies and watching the whole thing there."

He added that he would see the movie when it's released next year.

Lucas is serving as a creative consultant on the film, a vague role in which, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy explained, Lucas is essentially the go-to person for any "Star Wars"-related questions.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be in theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

Disney revealed on Thursday the names of a few of the new characters from the new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens.

Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive from Disney, but here's a look at the names. They're the characters we saw in the teaser trailer that came out a few weeks ago.

Let's break it down.

This little droid is BB-8.

The X-Wing pilot from the trailer, played by Oscar Isaac, is Poe Dameron.

The villain is Kylo Ren.

Daisy Ridley will play Rey. She's likely one of the leads of the new film.

John Boyega plays Finn. He's probably the other lead.

There's Something Fishy About The Name Of The New 'Star Wars' Villain (DIS)

Disney released the names of a few new Star Wars characters on Thursday.

One of them is the name of the bad guy, the scary-looking dude with a tri-blade lightsaber whom we saw in the teaser trailer that came out a few weeks ago.

Him:

star wars the force awakens sith lightsaberIt turns out his name is Kylo Ren.

But there's something wrong with that name. Kylo Ren is using a red lightsaber, which is used by the Sith, the evil Jedi who follow the Dark Side of the Force. But all Sith also have the title "Darth" in front of their name. (Think Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, and Darth Tyranus from earlier movies.)

So why isn't he Darth Kylo Ren?

Weird!

Let's speculate a bit.

It's possible Kylo Ren isn't a Sith quite yet. The Sith rules say there can only be two at a time, the master and the apprentice. When one dies, the other one becomes the master and finds a new apprentice. But at the end of "Return of the Jedi," both the master (Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine) and his apprentice (Darth Vader) die, effectively destroying the Sith.

So it's very possible that Kylo Ren is the first of the new generation of Sith and has yet to adopt the "Darth" title.

Or it's possible the Sith are gone for good and those who follow the Dark Side just call themselves whatever they please.

Remember, the title of the new Star Wars movie is "The Force Awakens," which could mean a lot of people across the galaxy are just discovering they can use the Force. Some of those will probably fall to the Dark Side like our friend Kylo Ren.

How The Millennium Falcon's Hyperdrive Noise Was Recorded

$

star wars han solo chewbaccaAs we saw in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer that was released late last month, there are many sounds out there that we directly associate with the sci-fi franchise – be it the gun fire of a TIE Fighter or the activation of a lightsaber. Certainly ranking with all of these noises are those associated with Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon, which has certainly made some unique rackets over the years. Certainly one of the most iconic is the legendary ship’s hyperdrive failing – but how did it get made?

Eyes on Cinema has dug up an interview from 1980 featuring Ben Burtt – the sound designer for Star Wars, and in the video there is a breakdown of all the various noises that came together to create the clatter that occurs when the Millennium Falcon fails to go into hyperspace in The Empire Strikes Back. Apparently there were eight sounds that wound up being combined to create the effect, but the video only identifies five of them, namely:

  • The inertia starter of an old 1928 biplane
  • An air jet recorded in a dentist’s office
  • The sound of an arclight motor starting and stopping
  • The sound of a motor located in the turret of an armored tank
  • Pipes underneath a broken sink in the bathroom at the recording studio

You can listen to the various noises in the video below:

Because the quality of the video is so bad at the end of that clip, which features the actual scene where the hyperdrive breaks down, you can watch a better quality edition below. It’s also interesting to really focus in on the sound and identify all of the different parts:

Ben Burtt’s work - not only on Star Wars but on features like E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, the Indiana Jones movies, and more – is nothing short of iconic, and the best news of all is both that he is still working and is currently part of the team making Star Wars: The Force Awakens (he previous he previously worked with director J.J. Abrams on both Star Trek films as well as Super 8). I’m excited to hear what new stuff he has in store.

The New 'Star Wars' Movie Comes Out One Year From Today (DIS)

cute droid star wars episode vii trailer

The first movie in the next Star Wars Trilogy, "The Force Awakens," premieres December 18, 2015.

That's one year from today.

So far, we know very little about what will happen in the movie beyond who's in the cast and some of the new characters' names. Disney released a teaser trailer last month, but it only gave us some minor clues about the plot. (And even then, we're mostly speculating.)

Here's a quick, high-level view of what to expect. Don't worry. No spoilers.

It Takes Place About 30 Years After "Return Of The Jedi"

The new trilogy is a sequel to the original Star Wars trilogy from the '70s and '80s. That was the story about how Luke Skywalker became a Jedi and defeated the evil Empire. Now we'll find out what happens after the death of Darth Vader and the Emperor.

Most Of The Classic Characters Are Returning

Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, and several other characters from the original trilogy will return for the new trilogy.

But There Are Some New Faces Too

It seems like the new trilogy will focus around a cast of new main characters. Disney already shared their names.

This is Finn.

This is Rey.

And this is the villain, Kylo Ren.

These Will Be The 12 Biggest Movies Of 2015

$

avengers age of ultron captain america thor2015 is going to be one of the biggest years at the box office in a long time.

Not only are we getting a new "Star Wars" movie, but we'll finally see the next "Avengers" grouping, which has been nearly three years in the making.

Those two movies alone have the potential of being billion-dollar films.

In comparison, 2014 only had one movie gross $1 billion— "Transformers: Age of Extinction."

Through plenty of sequels and reboots, we're counting down the movies that will be the biggest at theaters next year. It's going to feel like the early '90s with Arnold Schwarzenegger back as the Terminator and dinosaurs roaming around in "Jurassic World."

Mark these dates down in your calendar.

12. 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (Universal/Focus Features)

Release date:
Feb. 13, 2015

Why it will be huge: This will be the movie every guy will be dragged to see.

The best-selling book series dubbed "mommy porn" is making its big screen debut Valentine's Day weekend. There couldn't be a better release date for the erotica film about a naive college girl (Dakota Johnson) who becomes involved in a BDSM relationship with a billionaire named Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan).

While the film's trailer was the most-viewed all year, there are two reasons "Fifty Shades" is lower on our list. 1. Big blockbusters rarely come out in this month. "Passion of the Christ" currently holds the record for largest Feb. gross ($611.9 million). 2. Erotica movies are usually a niche group. 1992's "Basic Instinct" is the highest-grossing film in the genre making $352.9 million worldwide.

11. 'Ted 2' (Universal)

Release date:
June 26, 2015

Why it will be huge: "Ted," featuring Seth MacFarlane's foul-mouthed teddy bear and Mark Wahlberg, became the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy ever in 2012. It surpassed the record previously held by the first "Hangover.""Ted" made $549 million worldwide.

10. 'Inside Out' (Pixar/Disney)

Release date:
June 19, 2015

Why it will be huge: Pixar's reputation speaks for itself. The studio hasn't made a bad film yet (except perhaps the poorly-reviewed "Cars 2"). Regardless, none of them have been bombs and the majority of Pixar's animated movies make at least $500 million worldwide at theaters.

Buzz about its next animated picture, "Inside Out," is already growing. While the movie's concept about the inner workings of the brain and our emotions may sound a bit confusing, an early sneak peek of the film was very well received at the Animation Film Festival in France back in June.

The 15 Coolest Fan Edits Of Popular Movies

$

star wars han solo chewbacca

Do you ever finish watching a movie and wish it had been done slightly differently? You're not alone.

There are hundreds of people working together online to create unofficial fan edits out of movie, modifying them in clever — and frequently bizarre —  ways to create something totally new.

15. Bateman Begins: An American Psycho

Most fan edits correct errors in movies, or add in deleted scenes. However, some ambitious people edit different movies together to make something totally new. This fan edit combines footage from 'American Psycho', 'Batman Begins', 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Machinist' and creates one long story.

It's difficult to describe the plot of 'Bateman Begins', but it uses the rough outline of 'Batman Begins' as the movie's beginning, and then Christian Bale is shown to become more deranged and violent using footage from 'American Psycho' and 'The Machinist'. It sounds bizarre, and it is, but it makes for an entertaining watch.

14. AARRSSTW-WTSSRRAA

In case you hadn't guessed, this is the original 1977 'Star Wars' movie re-sorted by shot length. That's right, some eager 'Star Wars' fans made exact measurements of how long each camera angle lasts for and rearranged the entire movie.

Is it watchable? No, not really, it's difficult to make sense of the movie now. But it does show just how dedicated 'Star Wars' fans are, and forces you to look at the movie in an entirely different way.

You can watch the whole movie here.

13. Caddyshack: No Respect

'Caddyshack: No Respect' is an unofficial fan edit of classic 1980 cult comedy movie 'Caddyshack' which cuts out the character of Al Czervik as much as possible.

Here's the creator of the fan edit explaining why he made the changes:

"I hate Rodney Dangerfield. With a passion. He is not funny. Never was. His annoying presence stands out even more in Caddyshack next to comedic greats like Bill Murray and Chevy Chase."
