Christopher Nolan made a bunch of ‘Star Wars’-inspired movies when he was a kid

Christopher Nolan Tribeca

Ever since he was young, Christopher Nolan always knew he wanted to be a filmmaker.

"I was about 12 or 13 [when I decided to do this for a living] and I just became struck by the idea of a director," Nolan audience at the Tribeca Film Festival Monday night.

Like many great directors before, Nolan started making his own films on a Super 8 camera. As someone who came of age in the 1970s, one of his biggest influence was "Star Wars."

carrie fisher mark hamill star wars"That came out in the '70s and I'd been experimenting using Super 8 films and stuff. And then from the second I saw 'Star Wars' everything was space ships and science-fiction," Nolan said.

Nolan remarked that the "imaginatively titled" series of Super 8 films was called "Space Wars."

As a kid, Nolan felt he had achieved something great with "Space Wars." However, he recently revisited it and was surprised at what he saw.

"I actually showed a couple of them to my kids recently because I got them transferred on to DVD," said Nolan, "and I was a little disappointed at how bad it was."

During the candid conversation, Nolan described how every film he made was a stepping stone to something bigger. Without "Space Wars," he may never have been ready for his $6,000 feature film debut "Following." Without "Following," there would have been no "Memento" and with no "Memento," there would be no Nolan-helmed "Dark Knight" trilogy.

"That's the weird thing about a filmmaker's process ... or my process ... I sort of remembered it the way I wanted it to be," Nolan said, "coming back to your old films...they tend to change over time."

There’s a ‘Star Wars’ Easter egg in a lot of Marvel movies

Marvel and Lucasfilm's "Star Wars" franchise are both owned by Disney. Now, they share even more than just a common owner.

Have you caught the "Star Wars" Easter egg that pops up in a lot of Marvel movies?

In almost every single "Star Wars" movie, somebody loses an arm or a hand

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) famously loses his hand to Darth Vader, in an iconic scene from "Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back."

Mark Hamill GIF ArmIf you've been watching the latest Phase Two Marvel movies closely, you'll notice a character has been losing an arm — or hand — in each film, too.

Phase Two refers to the second of the three phases of Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Phase Two kicked off in 2013 with "Iron Man 3" and it will end with this summer's "Ant-Man."

President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, a self-proclaimed "Star Wars" fan, confirmed the gag is a homage to a galaxy far, far away during the recent press tour for "Avengers: Age of Ultron." But it didn't start that way.

"So I’m obsessed with 'Star Wars' - and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional," Feige told Cinemablend. "It sort of happens in every 'Star Wars' movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our 'Empire Strikes Back'?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one."

With two more films to go in Phase Two — "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man"— Feige gave away a bit of a spoiler. Since we've seen "Age of Ultron," we can confirm it definitely happens in that film.

Here are all the severed arms as they appear in the Marvel Universe so far:

"Iron Man 3" (2013)

Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) loses his arm during his final battle with Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.).

"Thor: The Dark World" (2013)

Thor lost his hand momentarily when Loki pretended to chop it off in a grand visual illusion.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014) Winter Soldier Arm GIF

Bucky (Sebastian Stan) is seen losing his arm in a flashback where he falls off a train and is thought to be dead.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014)Guardians of the Galaxy Groot Arm Chop

Groot (Vin Diesel) loses both of his arms during his first encounter with Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Don't worry, they grow back.

You can see more arm slicing in "Age of Ultron" May 1 and "Ant-Man" July 31.

Wall Street thinks 'Star Wars: Episode VII' will make $1.75 billion worldwide

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is months away, but it's one of the most-anticipated movies of the year.

The biggest question is just how much money "Star Wars: Episode VII" will make when the film debuts worldwide this December.

In a recent note to clients, analysts at Citi predict the worldwide box-office estimate for "Episode VII" at $1.75 billion.

That doesn't sound unreasonable given the worldwide appeal of the film. The latest teaser trailer was viewed 88 million times in 24 hours.

The return of the original cast members is an added draw, giving older generations a reason to return to a galaxy far, far away along with newer, younger viewers who will discover the franchise for the first time.

Previously, Credit Suisse's Michael Senno predicted the film may hit $1.2 billion globally.

Other analysts have pegged it at hitting $2 billion.

On the high end, Entertainment Weekly predicts "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will go on to be the highest-grossing movie ever with ticket sales of over $3 billion globally.

The highest-grossing films ever are 2009's "Avatar" ($2.7 billion) and 1997's "Titanic" ($2.2 billion).

The latest "Star Wars" film, 2005's "Revenge of the Sith"grossed $848 million worldwide. That film did not see the return of original cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is in theaters December 18, 2015.

Why the 'Star Wars' spinoff director dropped out of the film

josh trank star wars spinoff directorWhile director Josh Trank said Friday that he had “made a personal decision” to leave the "Star Wars" universe, sources say reports of the young director’s unusual conduct during the making of Fox’s upcoming "Fantastic Four" movie had raised alarm among Lucasfilm executives that were entrusting him with the second "Star Wars" stand-alone film.

Trank, 30, had raised eyebrows in April when he didn’t appear as scheduled at a "Star Wars" celebration in Anaheim.

At the time, both Disney and the director cited illness as the cause but multiple knowledgeable sources say the studio had asked the filmmaker not to attend while considering whether to proceed with him on the second spinoff in a planned series of films.

Indeed, producers on "Fantastic Four," set for release July 30, are said to have faced great challenges pulling the film together given behavior described by one insider as “erratic” and at times “very isolated.”

Trank did not offer clear direction, this person adds, saying, "If you've got someone who can't answer questions or who isn't sure or is in hiding, that's not good."

A Fox spokesman says the studio is “very happy with the movie and we can’t wait for audiences to see it” but acknowledges, “There were definitely some bumps in the road.”

Among those bumps: Trank has several small dogs who were left in a rented house in New Orleans while the film was shooting there. According to sources, as much as $100,000 worth of damage was done to the property. A source says the production considers any destruction of the property to be Trank's responsibility.

Citing Trank’s work on the 2012 found-footage superhero movie "Chronicle," an insider says: “No question there’s talent there. You can’t do 'Chronicle' by accident.” But Trank seemed “like one of these kids who comes to the NBA with all the talent and none of the character-based skills to handle it. There’s equipment he doesn’t yet have.”

Chronicle Movie 2012According to sources, Trank was sometimes indecisive and uncommunicative. Producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker had to step in to help pull the film together, though sources stress that Trank was still on set and directing the film. (Were that not the case, the production could have run afoul of the Directors Guild of America.)

Just over three months from opening, Fox’s "Fantastic Four" has done re-shoots. Those were complicated because stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara and Michael B. Jordan had obligations on other films.

The most recent round, which involved three days of re-shoots at the end of April, had to take place on weekends because of Teller’s work on Todd Phillip’s "Arms and the Dude." Parker and Kinberg are said to have been heavily involved in those re-shoots, pulling them away from duties in Canada on "X-Men: Apocalypse," which they also are producing.

fantastic four kate maraGiven the issues with Trank’s performance, the production added Stephen Rivkin ("Avatar") to help pull the film together. Trank had hired his "Chronicle" editor, Elliot Greenberg, on the project.

"Fantastic Four" is meant to reboot the Marvel superhero franchise for Fox. The comic is venerated for its place in history as it launched Marvel Comics in 1962 and was the early creation from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Fox made two movies, released in 2005 and 2007, that made $330 million and $289 million respectively but failed to capture moviegoers’ imagination. Fox hastened to make a new movie as it risked having the rights revert back to Marvel.

gareth edwards godzillaKinberg, who is producing the second "Star Wars" stand-alone project (the first, "Rogue One," is being directed by Gareth Edwards for a December 2016 release), is said to have communicated his displeasure with Trank to Kathleen Kennedy and the team at Lucasfilm.

As the "Star Wars" brain trust heard more about Trank's behavior and working style, they became less confident in handing over the film to him.

Now, having decided to part ways, the studio is searching for another filmmaker to take over the project.

Disney declined to comment.

boba fett star wars

Disney and Lucasfilm are making a "Star Wars" spinoff movie based on the beloved character Boba Fett, according to The Wrap.

The movie will come out in 2018 and tell the story of Boba Fett's origin, according to the report. Disney has not confirmed the report.

Boba Fett is one of the most popular characters in the "Star Wars" universe even though he has relatively little screen time in the movies. He's first introduced as a stoic bounty hunter hired by the evil Empire to track down Han Solo and Princess Leia.

In the "Star Wars" prequel movies, it's revealed that Boba Fett is the clone of another bounty hunter named Jango Fett. Jango's clones make up the clone army that start out good, but are actually under the control of evil Emperor Palpatine. The new Boba Fett movie will likely follow what happens to Boba Fett after the prequel movies, though plot details have yet to be confirmed.

Disney and Lucasfilm are making three spinoff "Star Wars" movies in addition to the three movies (Episodes VII, VII, and IX) that follow the main storyline. The spinoffs are called the "Star Wars" Anthology series. The first in the anthology is called "Rogue One" and comes out in 2016. That movie will tell the story of how the Rebels were able to steal the original Death Star plans from the Empire.

The highly anticipated next Star Wars movie, directed by J.J. Abrams, comes out on December 18, 2015 and is called "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." You can see the most recent trailer below.

'Star Wars VIII' will create 3,000 new jobs in Britain

star wars new trailerFINAL

London (AFP) - The eighth episode of "Star Wars" is to be filmed in Britain, the government announced on Monday, perhaps hoping the good news of jobs and investment might offer a pre-election boost.

The Conservative party of Prime Minister David Cameron may be hoping the "force" could help them beat centre-left rivals Labour at Thursday's general election.

Finance minister George Osborne made the announcement on the annual May 4 celebration of the George Lucas film franchise, describing it as "great news for the UK as a whole".

"It is what happens when you have an economic plan that is working and a film-making industry with real skills and talent," Osborne said at a visit to Ealing Studios in west London.

"There could not be better news on May the Fourth Be With You Day."

He said the filming of "Star Wars Episode VIII" would bring £100 million ($151 million, 136 million euros) in investment and create 3,000 jobs.

Directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the movie is expected to start filming in 2016 and be released in 2017.

Like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", the eagerly awaited seventh episode that is due to be released in December, the next episode is to be filmed at Pinewood studios in Buckinghamshire in southeast England, the home of many James Bond films.

Osborne has increased tax breaks for the film industry as finance minister and 2014 saw a record amount of investment spent on film production, according to the British Film Institute.

Inside the 'Star Wars' sequel that George Lucas never got to make

$
0
0

harrison ford daisy ridley the force awakens

George Lucas is not involved with the creation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

When interviewed by Stephen Colbert about the forthcoming sequel, the now-retired filmmaker said "I'm excited, I have no idea what they're doing"—they being director J.J. Abrams and his team.

But according to Bruce Handy's new Vanity Fair cover story on the creation of Episode VII, Lucas at one point did have a vision for the story that the new Star Wars film would tell. By the time he sold Lucasfilm and related properties to Disney for more than $4 billion, he’d “sketched out ideas for episodes VII, VIII, and IX,” writes Handy, and had already approached Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer, and Mark Hamill about being involved.

Once the property was in Disney’s hands, though, the company and executive producer Kathleen Kennedy mostly scrapped Lucas's ideas. Why? Apparently, people involved may have been getting flashbacks to child actor Jake Matthew Lloyd’s performance in the first prequel:

[Abrams] said Lucas’s treatment had centered on very young characters—teenagers, Lucasfilm told me—which might have struck Disney executives as veering too close for comfort to The Phantom Menace and its 9-year-old Anakin Skywalker and 13-year-old Queen Amidala. “We’ve made some departures” from Lucas’s ideas, Kennedy conceded, but only in “exactly the way you would in any development process.”

Handy’s article drives home just how much The Force Awakens came out of the idea of getting to fill an entirely blank space with new Star Wars story. Luke, Han, and Leia are back and are 30 years older, but other than that, the filmmakers had to fabricate something completely fresh. The initially reluctant Abrams says this feeling of open-ended possibility is what brought him on board: “This idea of what’s happened in these past 30-something years. Where is Han Solo? What happened to Leia? Is Luke alive?”

rey finn star wars episode vii The writing process apparently was somewhat tortured, with the Little Miss Sunshine screenwriter Michael Arndt making a first attempt but ultimately failing to pull together a script in time. As of early November 2013, the studio walls and whiteboards were filled with ideas, but the actual narrative hadn't been set in place.

Abrams and the Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi co-writer Lawrence Kasdan took over, starting from something very close to scratch. “We didn’t have anything,” Kasdan told Handy. “There were a thousand people waiting for answers on things, and you couldn’t tell them anything except, ‘Yeah, that guy’s in it.’ That was about it. That was really all we knew.” The two men then hashed out the story in conversations as they walked around Santa Monica, New York City, London, and Paris, and kept refining the script even as production began.

star wars force awakens lightsaberAbrams keeps talking about wanting to evoke the feel of the originals rather than the prequels—in the Vanity Fair story, he says he considered putting Jar Jar Binks's bones in the background of a Force Awakens scene. But perhaps an even bigger part of the reason for the fervent fan interest in every drib and drab of info about the Star Wars sequel is that its out-of-whole-cloth nature differs fundamentally from other big-budget franchise reboots.

The Marvel universe is raiding published comic books for a years-long master narrative; other based-on-previous-films films, from Abrams’s take on Star Trek to recent updates of Robocopand Terminator, often retread familiar stories and feature old characters recast with newer actors. By contrast, Star Wars, for the most part, has the potential to be an all-new vision in a familiar setting. It probably can't blow minds as thoroughly as Lucas did in 1977, but at least fans don't have to worry about spotty child-acting derailing the story that defined their own childhoods.

In “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope," we're introduced to Biggs, a mustache-rocking ol’ buddy of Luke Skywalker who perished in Luke’s X-wing trench run to destroy the Death Star.

On the surface, Biggs was just one of the Rebel X-wing pilots we grew a liking to during the battle sequence, like Wedge Antilles and Jek Porkins. But in previous versions of George Lucas’ script for "A New Hope," Biggs played a much larger role in the film, as he’s Luke's best friend back on Tatooine.

biggs1Now in Jamie Benning’s documentary, “Blast it Biggs! Where are you?!,” Biggs Darklighter is finally in the spotlight.

The 16-and-a-half minute short looks at rare photos and the Biggs' deleted scenes, with voiceover throughout from an interview with the actor who played Biggs, Garrick Hagon.

biggs2One Briggs deleted scene was supposed to be in the beginning of “A New Hope” where Biggs tells Luke he’s leaving the Imperial Academy to join the Rebel Alliance. The other is later in the movie when the two reunite before they get in their X-wings to take on the Death Star. The latter scene George Lucas put back into the movie for the film’s 1997 rerelease.

In the short, Hagon admits his disappointment when he first saw the film and realized that most of his scenes were taken out.

“It was admiration and a thrill mixed with disappointment,” Hagon said in the short. “Because I realized what a chunk [of my scenes] had gone.”

But Biggs has lived on in the “Star Wars” universe. The novels and comics that were published following the popularity of the original trilogy get into more detail about Biggs and Luke’s friendship, as well as Biggs’ time at the Academy.

Why the costumes in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' will be much different than in the original trilogy

star wars episode VII teaser trailer stormtroopers

In order to get the look right for "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens," costume designer Michael Kaplan had to throw out all the designs he was working with from the original trilogy.

Kaplan, who previously worked on "Blade Runner,""Fight Club," and J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek," didn't think anything from the original "Star Wars" trilogy could apply to a new film.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kaplan says that a lot of the old costumes, such as the stormtrooper uniforms, would not be usable anymore.

"Audiences of today have become so sophisticated that a lot of things you could get away with in the past, you can’t anymore." Kaplan told Vanity Fair. "So the new uniforms are much heavier."

Much of the action in the film is different than it was in the original and because of that, the new costumes had to be designed to accommodate that.

sean young blade runner"The action in the film required them to not be 'VacuFormed' [like the old uniforms] as those all broke and cracked. These new ones are much more heavy-duty, but they are redesigned, too, they’re not the same stormtroopers." Kaplan added.

While director J.J. Abrams wanted to hold on to the "uniqueness" of the stormtroopers, he also realized that it would be odd to "have the same stormtroopers this much later when Leia and Han are so much older."

"The Force Awakens" will take place 30 years after the events of "Return of the Jedi," which came out in 1983.

Instead of drastically changing the way the stormtroopers look, they decided to make their outfits a little simpler. Or, as Kaplan puts it, he thought: "what would Apple do?"

Like with a lot of new Apple products, Abrams wanted the stormtroopers to still look the same "at a glance" but also "different enough to kind of wow people and get them excited about the new design."

There were some other looks that Kaplan wanted to alter as well. He recalls being confused by the look of the warring factions.

"...The uniform colors kind of overlapped—both [the rebels and the Empire] had some khakis and olive, and I kind of thought, Now I’m in a position to do something about this." Kaplan said.

To remedy this problem, he gave The Empire "very cold blacks and grays and metallics and teal blues." Meanwhile, The Rebels are given a warmer look of "khakis and olives and some oranges."

Even the looks of classic characters such as Leia, Luke, and Han, who will return for "The Force Awakens," weren't completely sacred. However, Kaplan realizes that there is a line he must walk between preserving what the characters always were, and making necessary changes.

chewbacca harrison ford the force awakens"A lot of it had to do with what was right for the story and the action, but a lot of it was also, you know, people have a way of dressing." Kaplain said. "I wouldn’t really be doing my job if I thought, Hey, let’s redesign this character totally and put them in colors they’ve never worn. It just wouldn’t make any sense. But you also want new, interesting things to look at. You want enough change to be there."

You'll have to wait until the end of the year to see the new looks. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be in theaters December 18, 2015.

George Lucas was scared to death to shoot this epic scene in ‘Attack of the Clones’

Almost exactly three years from the release of “Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace,” “Episode II - Attack of the Clones” opened in theaters on May 16, 2002 with many excited for the release of the latest chapter, and hopeful that the continuation of the prequel storyline would leave behind the kiddy playfulness in “Episode I.”

10 years later in the saga, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is under the tutelage of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and is reunited with Senator Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) following an assassination attempt on her. Skywalker is assigned to protect Senator Amidala while Kenobi investigates the attempted assassination. Skywalker and Amidala soon fall in love, while Kenobi learns of the Republic’s clone army and the Separatists’ battle droids led by renegade Jedi master, Count Dooku (Christopher Lee). This leads to the beginning of the Clone Wars

Attack of the Clones PosterThe film concludes with Kenobi and Skywalker facing off against Dooku. Once Dooku fights them both off, Yoda enters the battle for a sequence most “Star Wars” fans never thought was possible.

Showing how far the computer graphic wizards at Industrial Light and Magic have come, we watch Yoda have a dazzling lightsaber battle with Dooku.

This goose-bump inducing scene took years to pull off and many sleepless nights for George Lucas.

“To be very honest with you, I was scared to death of this sequence and how we were going to pull this off,” Lucas said on the commentary of the Blu-ray of “Attack of the Clones.” “This was the biggest risk in the whole movie. Could I make this realistic enough to make it believable, or would it be this ludicrous joke.”

It was far from that. Let’s break it down.

Yoda enters the fray by facing off with Dooku using their powers of the Force.

Yoda 8There was a lot of tweaking that went on with this sequence before we all finally saw the finished product.

The original script had Yoda entering the Dooku fight right when he appears in the hanger. But some of the senior members of ILM, including visual effects supervisor John Knoll and animation director Rob Coleman were able to convince Lucas to draw the sequence out a bit and include the exchanging of Force powers before Yoda and Dooku turn to lightsabers.

“[We] talked to George month after month about how we could make this real and believable,” Coleman said on the “Clones” Blu-ray commentary. “We felt if we got into the fight too quickly the audience would not be able to travel that distance from Yoda being an 800-year-old character to be able to go around with such speed and be nimble. So we talked to George about, what we called, ‘The Wizards' Battle’ and we added this into the sequence because I think it really helps us as an audience to travel with Yoda to find the inner strength and energy to fight this evil Jedi master, this Sith lord.”

And another decision made before production began was to have a “digital double” of Christopher Lee. Though Lee boasts he holds the record for most sword fights in front of the camera than any other actor, the legend was 79 at the time of shooting, so a majority of his shots in the sequence were done by a stunt double.

lee_and_double_finalThen when the double's face could be revealed on camera, it was replaced digitally by Lee's face. And in regards to knowing where Yoda would be when they filmed the actors for the scene, a small Yoda doll was used on set as a reference point for the actors.

Lucas even had fun with Lee by placing a pair of fangs on the Yoda doll to tease Lee of his legendary performances as Dracula in the 1960s.

yoda fangsThe part that brought the most anxiety was making Yoda digital

In the theatrical release of “Episode I,” Yoda was still a puppet (a digital version replaced the puppet in the 2011 Blu-ray release of the film), so this was the first time an audience saw the 800-year-old Jedi Master sans Frank Oz (who not only did Yoda's voice but operated the puppet).

One of the biggest challenges for the animators was keeping that puppet feel.

Coleman and his team poured over footage of Yoda from “The Empire Strikes Back” to give their digital version authentic mouth movements and even have Yoda’s ears bounce slightly as the puppet version did.

lucas coleman at computerBut for the fight with Dooku, they had to create the believability of Yoda moving quickly. Lucas and Coleman spent months painstakingly going over the sequence that the animators created. They had to make a lot of decisions where Yoda was concerned: Will Yoda have a robe or won't he while fighting? They also had to make sure Yoda wasn't moving too fast in the battle, but enough to prove he was still a master of his craft.

yoda computerLucas said he knew the sequence would work when he saw Yoda's incredible entrance.

"I was worried right up to the point where the animators showed me the shot where he walks in and looks tough," he said. "Suddenly, Yoda in his acting, I believe this was a tough character you had to look out for… This is what we've been waiting for."

Much of the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" cast has been revealed, but there's still been one giant question mark up in the air until now.

StarWars.com revealed the role of motion capture king Andy Serkis in the upcoming film Thursday afternoon, and it sounds like he'll be on the Dark side of the Force.

Serkis, who's known for his motion capture roles as Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” series and Caesar in the “Planet of the Apes" films, will play Supreme Leader Snoke.

While we don't know much about the character yet, we do know Serkis will be using motion capture to bring Snoke to life via an image released on StarWars.com.

star wars the force awakens andy serkisThe image, which was originally shot for Vanity Fair's big "Star Wars" feature, but never made it into the final issue, comes from photographer Annie Leibovitz.

We've already gotten a little taste of Serkis' character in the first "Star Wars" teaser trailer, but you may not have realized it.

Serkis confirmed back in November 2014 to Absolute Radio he's the guy behind the ominous, yet thrilling voiceover in the first teaser trailer who says, "There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side and the light."

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is in theaters on December 18.

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has earned a reputation not just as one of America's leading scientists, but also as a fan and critic of science fiction. He critiqued the science behind "Gravity" and praised the accuracy of "Interstellar."

So it's not a surprise Chris Weitz, one of the writers of the "Star Wars" spin-off "Star Wars: Rogue One,"tweeted at Tyson to ask for some help with the astronomy of the film.

Here is what Weitz asked:

Weitz, however, may not have realized Tyson is a self-proclaimed "Star Trek" fan.

"I never got into 'Star Wars.' Maybe because they made no attempt to portray real physics. At all." Tyson told Business Insider back in 2013.

With 3.7 million followers, Tyson is very active on Twitter, but he has yet to respond to Weitz's request — in public at least.

Maybe Weitz didn't know about Tyson's strong feelings about "Star Wars," or maybe these spin-offs will look more scientifically accurate than most of the franchise.

All we know is that the director's chair is empty for at least one of the spin-offs, in case Tyson wants to give it a shot.

"Star Wars: Rogue One" will be out in theaters in 2016.
