It’s Star Wars Day, so here’s a drone that looks like the Millennium Falcon

star wars droneLook, I’ll be straight with you: You don’t need the Air Hogs Ultimate Millennium Falcon Quad. It’s another in a long line of probably overpriced toys that aim to capitalize on the undying thirst for everything Star Wars. Compared to the Blade Nano QX, our favorite starter drone, it’s neither as nimble in the air nor as easy to repair. In fact, there are no replacement parts to buy for it in the first place.

But it’s a quad that looks like the Millennium Falcon, and it works. And today is Star Wars Day.

The ergonomics here make it difficult to perform any sharp turns, but take it easy and it shouldn’t be hard for anyone to get the hang of.

Like the Helix X4 Stunt on which it’s based, it’s coated in a soft foam that’s surprisingly tough — you can fly it into a wall (and you will) and generally expect it to come away unscathed. The controller is simple enough to grasp, and it has a couple of shoulder buttons that’ll set off LED lights and appropriate sound effects. It’s all very cute. If your kid is a Star Wars nut, they should have a ball.

The same issues that apply to any toy drone still apply here: It’ll drift uncontrollably in any sort of wind, and it’ll only last a little over 5 minutes before it needs a recharge. The battery isn’t removable either, so you’ll have to wait for it to refill over USB before firing it back up again. On the plus side, it being a toy means you don’t have to register it with the FAA.

All told, if you want a fun way to help your kids pretend they’re Han Solo, the Air Hogs is worth a look.

Air Hogs Star Wars Ultimate Millennium Falcon Quad, $74.99, available at Amazon.
