Apple designer Jony Ive helped create a lightsaber for the new Star Wars movie (AAPL)

The New Yorker has published a new profile of Apple's design chief, and it reveals that he has been working on some extra-curricular projects.

Ive sat next to director J.J. Abrams at a dinner party in New York, where the pair got chatting about Star Wars. Abrams is directing the new Star Wars movie, which is going to be released in December.

At the dinner party, Abrams told Ive that he was working on Star Wars, and Ive came back to him with some "very specific suggestions" about how the movie's lightsabers should look.

Here's what Ive told the New Yorker about his conversation with J.J. Abrams:

It was just a conversation ... I thought it would be interesting if it were less precise, and just a little bit more spitty ... [a lightsaber should be] more analog and more primitive, and I think, in that way, somehow more ominous.

We don't know exactly what Abrams did with Ive's advice, but it's possible that it resulted in the unusual lightsaber seen being wielded by villain Kylo Ren in the movie's trailer.

Here's a still of the trailer showing the lightsaber:

There's rumour going around that Han Solo dies in the new 'Star Wars' movie

Let’s get this clear – there is absolutely no official basis for that headline.

It’s a rumour first posted on Star Wars fan site Making Star Wars, which admittedly, has got a few things right in the past.

The other point that needs to be noted is the details surrounding the rumour simply say Han Solo isn’t seen after his apparent death. Not that he actually dies.

Still:

Here’s a few details of what a friend of MSW editor-in-chief Jason Ward told him. The friend was at Pinewood and says this is what was shot:

  • A sequence takes place on the ramparts of The Evil Castle.
  • Han Solo is hiding and decides to reveal himself to Kylo Renn, the guy with the ridiculous lightsaber which may or may not have been designed by Apple guru Jony Ive.
  • Finn, Rey, Chewbacca and BB-8 stop and watch as Han Solo confronts Kylo Ren. Kylo Renn “silences the conversation forever”.
  • Chewbacca roars and lets of a series of laser blasts, and they all flee to the Millennium Falcon.

(You should head over to MSW if you want the rest of the details.)

The bit that has everyone talking is that Solo “is never in a scene after this”.

That may mean Solo’s dead; it may not. It’s just a rumour from the set and to find out if it’s true, you’ll still have to go and see the film.

So, sorry, no “spoiler alert” needed. That comes when somebody’s actually watched the whole movie, or as it may be, the whole trilogy.

Dirk Gates, founder and former CEO of internet connectivity companies Xirrus and Xircom, has listed his California home for $14.9 million, according to Curbed.

The Westlake Village home has some crazy features, including 11 bathrooms, a two-floor library, basketball court, and water slide.

However, there's one room that "Star Wars" fans, in particular, will love: a bedroom that's been decorated in honor of the films, complete with an airspeeder bed and fake snow.

The entire mansion is truly a sight to behold.

A modern sculpture greets you upon entrance.

Inside, the family room is large enough for a giant sectional couch.

The home has six bedrooms in total. With fake snow, an airspeeder replica, and a mini R2D2, this one would be perfect for die-hard "Star Wars' fans.

New 'Star Wars' books will connect 'The Force Awakens' with the original trilogy

star wars episode VI return of the jedi

Longtime Star Wars fans whose insatiable enthusiasm incited them to delve deeper into the mythos with the Expanded Universe of novels and comic books were devastated to hear last April that Disney would be disavowing the canonical place of those works; essentially erasing them the continuity. However, don’t think that the concept of an Expanded Universe in books is going away anytime soon.

It has just been announced that Disney will be partnering with publishers to pump out at least 20 new Star Wars books that will adhere to the new post Original Trilogy canon of the upcoming sequel films.

According to a scoop by Entertainment Weekly, Disney will team with Worldwide Publishing and Disney subsidiary Lucasfilm Press to unleash what will be "at least" 20 new Star Wars books onto the market this fall. The move is designed to herald the impending release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens this December. In fact, some of the books will serve as a newly-christened canonical bridge that directly connects the end of the Original Trilogy, 1983's Return of the Jedi, with the upcoming sequel.

star wars the force awakens sith lightsaberEarlier today, I covered a story about how a new Disney-sanctioned Star Wars novel may have provided a canon-acknowledged explanation for that notorious crossguard lightsaber seen in The Force Awakens trailer. This plays perfectly towards the idea that these new books will have a deep connection with the new films.

In fact, Disney is overseeing a small, exclusive "clandestine society" of novel writers who will be apprised of critical details and plot points of the upcoming sequel film. It seems to reflect the idea that Disney does not want to let these new Expanded Universe works become either too cluttered or filled with material anachronistic to the films. That can only be a good thing.

The prospect of more refined, verified literary Star Wars fiction would seem to be a step in the right direction. If anything, it creates a level of certainty in the brand. No one wants to invest their valuable time reading novels that don’t directly connect to the movie continuity. At that point, you’re reading glorified fan fiction (which is a shame, because a lot of great work from talented Star Wars writers like Timothy Zahn have essentially been flushed down the Death Star garbage chute).(Although, that is not to say that there wasn’t a lot of crap, as well.) However, the main consolation appears to be an assurance that the new novels will be well worth the investment of your time. Additionally, publishers, Del Ray, DK and Marvel Comics will also play a part in the new printed Star Wars initiative going into the future.

star wars episode vii the force awakensThe range of book releases will reportedly be eclectic, genre-wise. Some of the guaranteed 20 releases will simply be storybooks and stickerbooks, geared towards toddlers and pre-grade-school children. However, some will take the form of Young Adult novels, marketed to teenagers. Those titles will apparently focus on characters of the Original Trilogy era with designs to hook a YA demographic who generally were over a decade from being mere gleams in the eyes of their parents when the Second Death Star blew to smithereens.

Perhaps the idea of a rollout of the traditional Star Wars mythology altered to a form they recognize may stoke their enthusiasm for the new films.

Fans will be able to head to secret screenings of ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strike Back’ in London

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back poster

It appears that some “Star Wars” fans in London are in for an experience with one of the series’ best films. The organization known as Secret Cinema will be channeling their repertory skills to put on a series of screenings of “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” that will use the showing of the film as the centerpiece to a completely immersive celebration of the film that infuses cinema with the ephemeral experience of a massive live role playing community.

The organization, which prides itself in the secrecy of its designated screening events, proliferated the quasi-secret announcement of their “Empire” plans through their social media. However, the exact location of the screenings are given out in a comically clandestine method, as registrants have been told to "look out for a secret code on forgotten buildings." As the company’s invite to the "secret" Empire screenings reads: “Earth is the system. We are seeking rebels from around the world to join the Rebel Alliance and head to a Secret City where they will be taken on a journey through the world of Star Wars.”

The call to cinematic arms is not as cryptic as it might seem to the uninitiated. The company’s very branding centers on a sliver of mystique appropriate to their motto, "Remember. Tell No One." And yet, a lot of people do, in fact, "tell." Big time. The UK-based company, which has been putting together these grand festive screening experiences since 2007, made headlines last year with their hugely ambitious efforts to screen the time-bending crowd-pleaser, “Back to the Future,” which sold a whopping 65,000 tickets.

The BTTF event in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park would transform a portion of the public space into a virtual replica of the film’s fictional town of Hill Valley, CA. For all intents and purposes, Secret Cinema turned that bit of land into a REAL town with about 20 actual shops and intricately-crafted sites that took the idea of a simple screening of a 30-year-old film and transformed it into a true cultural destination filled with appropriately-costumed patrons. In fact, despite the overall project being bogged down with cancellations, the venture was so successful, that they announced plans to bring their “Back to the Future” experience to the United States sometime this year with dates in Los Angeles.

Now, with several dates set for their screenings of “The Empire Strikes Back” set in London from June 4 to August 2, we could potentially be witnessing the most impressive interactive tribute to a film, ever. Their call implied that they were seeking "Rebels" to head to "a secret city." Based on their “Back to the Future” plans, this would seemingly be outdoors, implying that we could be looking at a snowy, Hoth-themed event.

While it’s difficult to determine how their thematic transformational process would manifest without setting the bar impossibly high, one would think that the possibility of reproductions of a Rebel Base or maybe a few approaching AT-AT walkers might be in the works. (Assuming that swampy Dagobah is too bleak and Cloud City is well…in the clouds.) Stay tuned for more details on these “Empire Strikes Back” screenings as we hear them.

The name of the first "Star Wars" spinoff movie will be called "Rogue One."

Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement Thursday during the company's annual shareholders' meeting.

StarWars.com has the full announcement.

The film will be directed by Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla") and will star Felicity Jones.

Those in attendance received a quick glimpse at concept art for the film.

"Rogue One" will be released December 16, 2016 and will begin filming in London this summer.

Previously, Iger confirmed at least three "Star Wars" spinoff films are in the works.

"Star Wars: Episode VII" will be released December 18, 2015.

Here's the announcement from StarWars.com:

This morning at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, across the street from Lucasfilm, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting where he announced news regarding the first Star Wars stand-alone movie as well as Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (MonstersGodzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (CinderellaAbout a BoyAntz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight RisesFast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (TintinWar of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of BrothersThe Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of LooperDon JonBrick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

"Star Wars Episode VIII," the eighth movie in the core Star Wars movie franchise, will be released on May 26, 2017, Disney announced Thursday.

This will be the sequel to "The Force Awakens," the new "Star Wars" movie that will be released on December 18, 2015.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm and the "Star Wars" franchise in 2012, it committed to making at least six new "Star Wars" movies.

The new trilogy, Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, will continue the original story from the other six "Star Wars" movies.

Disney is also making three spin-off movies that tell new stories outside the core "Star Wars" movies. The first spin-off movie will be called "Rogue One." It will be released on December 16, 2016.

Here's the press release from Disney:

Here are two theories on what the new 'Star Wars' spinoff movie could be about (DIS)

x-wings flying over the water star wars episode vii trailer

Disney announced Thursday the title of the first “Star Wars” spinoff movie, “Rogue One.”

“Rogue One” will take place outside the events of the core “Star Wars” movie franchise, Episodes I through IX. It’ll be the first of three spinoffs Disney has planned over the next six years.

Disney didn’t give any details about the movie other than its release date (December 16, 2016) and one cast member (Felicity Jones). But based on the title, I have some theories on what the movie will be about.

In the various “Star Wars” books, comics, cartoons, and video games, Rogue Squadron is a group of X-Wing pilots led by Luke Skywalker. The squadron formed shortly after the events of “A New Hope” (the first “Star Wars” movie from 1977 where Luke blows up the Death Star). Rogue Squadron was made up of the best pilots, and they go on a lot of adventures. The Rogue Squadron video games for Nintendo 64 and Gamecube were especially good.

But Rogue Squadron’s story mostly ended before "Return of the Jedi" and we only got to see them once on the big screen when they destroyed the second Death Star.

Just to be clear, this is pure speculation on my part, but I think there are two possible scenarios for “Rogue One.”

The first will tell the story of how the original Rogue Squadron formed under Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. The problem with that is the actors who played those characters are way too old to look the part. Denis Lawson (the actor who played Wedge) is 77. Mark Hamill is 63.

On the other hand, that story could be told through the perspective of another pilot, perhaps the one played by Felicity Jones.

I think it’s more likely “Rogue One” will take place in the same timeframe as the upcoming trilogy, which begins on December 18, 2015 with the release of “The Force Awakens.” That movie takes place about 30 years after “Return of the Jedi.”

If the galaxy faces some sort of new threat, maybe “Rogue One” will be about the formation of a new Rogue Squadron led by Felicity Jones’ character. “Rogue One” sounds like a fighter pilot call sign to me, so maybe Jones will be the leader of this new fighter squadron.

Again, I’m just spitballing here. There are also a lot of other theories about the spinoff movies and what they’ll be about:

  • Some think one movie will be about a young Han Solo.
  • Some think one movie will be about the bounty hunter Boba Fett.
  • Some think one movie will be about the heist the Rebels pulled off to steal the plans for the second Death Star.
  • And probably a lot more.

Maybe “Rogue One” will be about some of those things. Maybe it’ll be totally different. But it’ll be fun to speculate over the next year.

Disney CEO Bob Iger unveiled the name and release date of the first "Star Wars" spinoff Thursday at the company's annual shareholder meeting.

"Rogue One" will be released December 16, 2016 and star Felicity Jones ("The Theory of Everything").

It wasn't the only treat attendees received.

According to fan site Stitch Kingdom, which was on hand at the event, Disney also showed off the first concept art for the spinoff.

Here's how Stitch Kingdom described what they saw:

My personal take on it was it evoked concept art of a video game. It personally screamed Halo to me. It was very dark and done in greens, so it evoked the idea that it was being done under the cloak of night. Dozens of figures in fatigues appeared to be storming something with a strange helicopterish vehicle (open on the sides) in the background, releasing more troops.

/Film has a bit more info from others describing what they saw at the event. The image reportedly showed “4-5 armored, soldier-like persons on the ground.” A few ships were seen in the background.

Disney has yet to reveal any concept art for the film.

We may not have to wait too long, though.

Next month, the annual "Star Wars" celebration will take place in Anaheim, California.

Production on "Rogue One" is set to begin in London this summer.

One of the most talented young actresses in Hollywood is officially a part of the "Star Wars" franchise.

Thursday, it was announced Felicity Jones would be joining the cast of the first "Star Wars" spinoff, "Rogue One."

You may recognize the 31-year-old actress.

Jones received an Oscar nomination for her performance playing Stephen Hawking’s wife, Jane, in "The Theory of Everything."

Even though "Rogue One" won't be in theaters until December 16, 2016, it's worth getting to know Jones before then.

Jones grew up in Birmingham, England, where she was encouraged to get into acting by her uncle, actor Michael Hadley (“Pirate Radio”). Her first role was at age 12 in the 1996 UK TV movie “The Treasure Seekers,” co-starring Keira Knightley.

A former 'Star Wars' writer came up with the name for the spinoff film

Disney announced the title of the first "Star Wars" spinoff will be called "Rogue One" Thursday during its annual shareholder meetings.

The name evokes images of the Rogues, a rebel alliance squad founded in part by Luke Skywalker.

However, what's most interesting is the origin of the spinoff's name.

Screenwriter Gary Whitta ("The Book of Eli") took to Twitter to reveal he came up with the name "Rogue One."

Whitta was originally hired to write a screenplay for the film along with director Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla"). The announcement was made on the official Star Wars site May 2014. He left the project in January after completing a first draft of the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In Thursday's "Rogue One" announcement, Whitta's name was nowhere to be seen, prompting some fans to take notice.

Chris Weitz ("Cinderella,""About a Boy") has taken over script duties while chief creative officer of Industrial Light & Magic, John Knoll, is credited for the "Rogue One" story idea.

On his website, Whitta lists serving as co-writer of "Star Wars Rogue One" under his body of work. According to Whitta, he helped come up with the story and an early version of the film's screenplay.

Business Insider has reached out to Whitta for comment.

We'll update this post if we hear back from him.

5 reasons you should be excited about the 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' director

$

rian johnson

Thursday, brought a lot of news for "Star Wars" fans.

The title of the first spinoff, "Rogue One," was announced along with the release date for "Star Wars: Episode VIII" (May 26, 2017).

The news brought the likely excitement from the franchise’s loyal fanbase, but let's take a second to delve into who Rian Johnson is, the director who will be taking the reigns of the original franchise after J.J. Abrams’ “Episode VII: The Force Awakens" is released in December.

If you don’t live and breath all things The Force, you probably didn't know that just under nine months ago news broke that Johnson would not only write and direct “Episode VIII” but“Episode IX” as well.

While Johnson has been quiet about the whole thing, yesterday’s announcement proved that at least half of that news was correct.

And Johnson had some fun with it on Twitter:

Soon after though, he finally fessed up:

Most fans were excited when J.J. Abrams announced he'd be directing “Episode VII,” as it confirmed that Disney was serious about bringing new voices into the "Star Wars" universe, once completely controlled by its creator George Lucas.

But the news of Johnson jumping in following Abrams brought universal acceptance.

Here's five reasons why you should be too.

1. His debut feature was incredible

Johnson, 41, was born in Maryland but grew up in San Clemente, California and it would be that area and his love of Dashiell Hammett detective stories that would bring to life his feature length debut, “Brick.”

brickMade for only $500,000 and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Johnson combined film noir, drugs, and the drama of high school life to create a fantastically fresh genre movie within the modern-day teen world. Gordon-Levitt gets all gumshoe and shakes things up through the different cliques of a San Clemente high school as he tries to uncover the death of his ex-girlfriend.

2. The visuals in his films are striking

Though immediately grabbing is the dialogue is completely 1930s hardboiled detective slang, the film also showed that Johnson has a unique visual eye as "Brick" is full of beautiful imagery.

brick_water2

brick_jgl2

brick_car2The film would garner Johnson instant acclaim and a “Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision” at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

3. He knows how to work with big-name talent.

Three years later, Johnson worked on a large-budgeted con movie titled “The Brothers Bloom.” The film starred Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody as brothers who specialize in running scams on millionaires. Up for one final job, Rachel Weisz plays the mark, but the brothers soon realize she’s got her own agenda.

brothers bloomWhile it received mixed reviews by critics, the film did prove that Johnson could work with name actors, take on multiple lush locations, and pull off action sequences.

brother_bloom

4. He's directed two of the most memorable "Breaking Bad" episodes

In 2010, Johnson once more elevated his notoriety in the industry when he began directing episodes of “Breaking Bad.” He directed three total including the polarizing “Fly” episode and the third-to-last episode of the show, “Ozymandias,” which some consider the best episode of the whole series, including series creator Vice Gilligan.

breakingbad3Once more his visual techniques shined, especially in “Fly,” which takes place mostly in Walter and Jesse’s underground meth lab in season three and includes the POV of a fly trapped in the lab.

breaking bad fly

5. The fanboys already love him

In 2012, Johnson’s cred in the sci-fi world shot through the roof with the release of “Looper.”

Messing with our heads thanks to an elaborate time travel story, we follow Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), an assassin known as a looper, who offs people at the whim of his mob bosses from the future. But when he realizes they have sent back his future self (Bruce Willis) to kill, things get complicated.

looper2With “Looper,” Johnson elevated to world building, creating a "Blade Runner"-like future.

looper_finalThe visuals, as we’ve become accustomed to in his films, are beautiful and he uses more CGI than in the past.

looperHere, he also began working with make-up, specifically getting Gordon-Levitt to look more like a young Willis.

willis_finaljgl_finalHe likely didn't think this at the time, but the film has elements that proves he's capable of taking on "Star Wars."

With this body of work, we are pretty excited with what he’ll be bringing to “Star Wars.” We don’t know what “Episode VIII” is about yet, but we’ll keep you posted once production begins.

The film will be released May 26, 2017.

the phantom menace1final

When “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” opened in theaters May 19, 1999 the anticipation for the continuation of the saga was palpable. Fans would finally get the first three installments leading up to “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.” All those hours of discussing what led Obi-Wan Kenobi to live in seclusion on Tatooine or why Anakin Skywalker turned to the dark side to become Darth Vader would finally be revealed.

Though the film earned over $1 billion dollars worldwide in its theatrical run, many critics and loyal fans weren’t that impressed by George Lucas’ return to his galaxy far, far away. From the strange sexual connection between 9-year-old Anakin (Jake Lloyd) and 14-year-old Queen Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) to Jar Jar Binks, there was a lot to pick on Lucas about.

the phantom menace posterBut one exception — and watching it 16 years later still gives me goosebumps — is the fight at the end of the movie between Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) versus the Sith Lord Darth Maul (Ray Park) during the Battle of Naboo.

Doing a deep-dive of the scene, it's shocking to see what George Lucas and his team needed to use to pull off one of the pinnacle shots in the duel.

But first, let's get ourselves familiar again with the scene.

Accompanied by a new piece of music from John Williams, who has been responsible for all of the iconic scores in the “Star Wars” saga, the scene shows that Lucas was prepared to elevate the lightsaber battles from episodes IV-VI. Faster, more complex moves and the inclusion of a new-style lightsaber sported by Maul, which had double blades, the scene gives the movie the jolt it needed following a drawn out podrace on Tatooine earlier and heavy dialogue-driven diplomatic scenes.

Lucas pushed his stunt team to create a fighting style different from the previous films as this is the era of Jedi in their prime. And in casting Maul he turned to Park, who was already doing stunts on the film. When Lucas saw a tape of him doing moves with the double-bladed lightsaber he gave him the role.

ewan park duel 2

As per Lucas’ style, the Jinn/Kenobi/Maul fight is one of four battles going on simultaneously. There’s also Queen Padmé and her guard detail trying to retake the palace from Federation Viceroy Gunray; Jar Jar Binks and the rest of the Gungan army going up against the Federation’s droid army; and Anakin has found himself in space battling the Federation’s droid control ship after accidentally starting the starfighter he was hiding in. Lucas uses this method to keep the action from getting stale and extending the battles in running time.

Specifically focusing on the lightsaber battle, you have the intimidating figure of Maul — which up to this moment we had only seen mostly standing around looking sinister and for a brief moment battling Jinn on Tatooine — holding his own against two Jedi.

During the fighting, Kenobi is kicked by Maul and falls down a lower level of the room and finds himself hanging from one of the catwalks in the generator room.

With Jinn fighting Maul one-on-one, Maul leads him towards a narrow hall with laser fields.

the phantom menace 3final

Kenobi finds the strength to force-jump back on the catwalk. He jumps once more to the level Jinn and Maul are on and races back to the action. But is held up when the laser fields turns on. Jinn and Maul are also separated by the fields, leading to a pause in the action.

the phantom menace4

When we return after checking in on Anakin, Jar Jar and Padmé’s progress, we find Jinn, Kenobi and Maul preparing for the fields to open.

the phantom menace5final

Using The Force they are prepared before the fields are opened with Jinn and Maul instantly going back at it. Kenobi is still racing to assist his Master.

the phantom menace6

The fields close just before Kenobi can enter the fray and he is forced to watch as Maul kills Jinn.

the phantom menace8Once you get over the shock of seeing a lightsaber go through someone, you can't help but find the reaction of Kenobi eerily similar to Luke Skywalker watching Kenobi’s death by the hand of Darth Vader in “A New Hope.”

star wars darth vader obi wan kenobiIn the commentary track of “The Phantom Menace” Blu-ray, Lucas explained the challenges of this portion of the scene.

“One of the most difficult parts of this sequence was figuring out a way to separate Obi-Wan from Qui-Gon,” he said. “I had to have a situation where Qui-Gon could get trapped and Obi-Wan would have to look and watch him get killed and not be able to do anything about it.”

Kenobi finally gets his chance to avenge Jinn’s death as the final laser field opens.

phantom ewan and rayLucas remarked on McGregor and Park’s intensity in this duel.

“This was a fun sword fight between Ewan and Ray because they were really into it and they were very much out to prove who was the better swordsman,” he said in the commentary. “They were very much challenging each other, which made for a challenging shoot but very exciting. They finished this and their swords were almost bent in half they were hitting each other so hard.”

But things don’t go well when Maul force-pushes Kenobi into a pit, leaving him hanging for his life as Maul kicks his lightsaber into the dark void.

The Phantom Menace9finalLucas notes that this moment is a theme in the saga.

“[Obi-Wan] falls over the ridge earlier [in the battle], falls over here. Copying kind of what happens in ‘Empire Strikes Back’ with Luke in the same kind of sword fight with a Sith and falling over the edge.”

darth sykwalker

But in a move that surprises Maul, Kenobi force-jumps out of the pit while using The Force to get Jinn’s lightsaber, flips over Maul, and slices him in half.

the phantom menace10Lucas says the four battles were switched around in the way they ended numerous times in post production. But he finally settled on the Kenobi/Maul battle to conclude them all.

“When you have four endings basically you have to figure out which is the most important and save it for last and the most shocking,” he said. “Which is Darth Maul being cut in half, and you make it the last one.”

In looking back on "The Beginning" documentary we also get a glimpse into the making of the Jinn/Kenobi/Maul duel.

Here's Park getting his Darth Maul makeup applied.

maul painted final

Though the generator room looks like a giant section of Padmé’s palace, it actually was a portion of a soundstage the first three films were all shot on in London. Most of the vast space created in post production.

set final"The Beginning" shows the section of filming where Kenobi pulls himself from the catwalk to get back into the fight. Here McGregor is shown a model of the generator room and where the catwalk he's hanging from is located.

A challenge making that sequence was finding a way for McGregor to leap back onto the catwalk in a "graceful, Jedi-like move."

First they tried a trampoline.

kenobi jumpsThat didn't work.

After the shot, Lucas came over to say that from his monitor "you can see that he's bouncing on something."

This leads to a practical solution, but one that's surprising to see on the set of a "Star Wars" film. The stunt team decided to lift McGregor up while he's standing on a wooden plank.

enter board finalkenobi jump with boardThat turned out to be successful.

Pretty incredible that even on a $115 million budgeted movie sometimes what works best is some basic DIY ingenuity.

Though it's hard to justify many things in “The Phantom Menace,” the Jinn/Kenobi/Maul duel shows the strength of the "Star Wars" saga. Unique battles with a thrilling score is the hallmark of “Star Wars” and this one especially stands out as it highlights the beauty of the lightsaber duels and its ferocity.

It brings us some hope that all those years of waiting for the prequel wasn’t all in vain.

Here's who may direct 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

jj abrams x-wingIt may seem premature to discuss directors for Star Wars: Episode IX, considering that we're still entire seasons away from seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

But as Disney has a minimum of five Star Wars movies planned at the moment (the core trilogy and two standalones...so far), with the intention of making certain that one Star Wars movie is released each calendar year, you can see why they might want to plan ahead.

The original Star Wars trilogy employed three different directors, while the prequels just had George Lucas at the helm for all three installments.

Depending on who you ask, Disney might be taking the former approach for the new trilogy. JJ Abrams is directing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, while Rian Johnson is directing the still otherwise untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII. This much we know for sure.

But now two names have surfaced in connection with Star Wars: Episode IX: Francis Lawrence and ... JJ Abrams.

There's been talk of all kinds of problems between Mr. Abrams and Disney, and the first draft of the press release announcing Star Wars: Rogue One and the release date for Star Wars: Episode VIII even left his name off of Episode VIII's executive producer credit (that was quickly corrected).

Latino Review (who first reported the news) claim that four of their sources have verified that Abrams is at least being discussed for the job.

But Making Star Wars also reports that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence is also in the mix for the director's chair.

Francis Lawrence directorHe's certainly got a profitable track record thanks to Katniss and friends, he's clearly not afraid of the genre blockbuster, and it at least appears that his scheduleis clear enough for the job. At the very most, Disney and Lawrence have had "quiet talks." Making Star Wars' sources also seem to believe in the Abrams discussions, too.

But keep in mind that when Rian Johnson was first announced as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode VIII, there were some conflicting reports that he had also been brought on to direct Episode IX. Depending on who you ask, he's either writing that movie or writing and directing it.

My own suspicion is that we'll get a third director for Star Wars: Episode IX and whoever it is will be announced at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim this April. More on this as we get it.

The legendary composer behind every 'Star Wars' movie ever made is going to sit one out

When iconic filmmakers like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg need music for their films they turn to one person, composer John Williams.

From all of the “Star Wars” movies to “Raiders of the Lost Ark” to “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial,” Williams’ music is as memorable as the films themselves.

However, it seems the 5-time Oscar winner is scaling back on his work load.

According to reports, “Rogue One,” the first spinoff film from the “Star Wars” sage, will not have a Williams score.

This marks the first time a “Star Wars” films will not be composed by Williams, now 83 years old.

Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat will be on the project, which will be directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones.

Desalt recently won an Oscar for his original score of “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

Last week, DreamWorks announced that John Williams had backed out of Spielberg’s next film, “Bridges of Spies” due to a “minor health issue, now corrected.” Thomas Newman, who just finished the latest James Bond movie, “Spectre,” will be taking over.

In another first, “Spies” is the first time in three decades a Williams composition will be absent from a Spielberg film.

But don’t worry, there’s more Williams music on the way. He did compose the score for “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens,” which opens in theaters December 18.

He’s also written scores for the upcoming “Jurassic World” and is attached for “Indiana Jones 5,” once more re-teaming him with Spielberg.

Here's why more 'Star Wars' actors haven't become huge stars

Call it a double-edged lightsaber.

Every actor in Hollywood chases Star Wars, hoping the gig will provide instant A-list entree. But the Star Wars track record is filled with underachievers and stalled careers.

Six movies in, the franchise has spawned just one megastar: Harrison Ford.

"The problem is, when you are in such a massive franchise — and there's no bigger franchise than Star Wars — a lot of moviegoers look at an actor and only can see the character they played in it," says Phil Contrino, analyst at Boxoffice.com.

Natalie Portman, who already had a hot career before Episodes I-III, admitted she struggled after the exposure. "Everyone thought I was a horrible actress," she said in December. "I was in the biggest-grossing movie of the decade, and no director wanted to work with me."

Star Wars Natalie PortmanNeither Ewan McGregor nor Liam Neeson was helped by the franchise.

Liam Neeson as Qui Gon Jinn in Star WarsMcGregor famously fell out as the lead in Danny Boyle's The Beach in favor of Leonardo DiCaprio around the same time as Episode I's 1999 release.

Ewan McGregor Liam NeesonThe list of acting careers that never took off is even longer, from original stars Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher to Jake Lloyd (young Anakin Skywalker) and most notably Hayden Christensen, whose star was on the rise when he nabbed 2002's Attack of the Clones.

Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones hayden christensen
Manager/producer Mike Marcus, who booked director Irvin Kershner for The Empire Strikes Backand Richard Marquand for Return of the Jedi, says the career implosions are coincidence.

"I don't think it ever hurt any actors," says the former CAA agent. "Maybe they weren't going to be a movie star anyway. This at least gave them a shot." The upcoming trilogy and interspersed spinoffs pose new challenges for stars Daisy RidleyAdam DriverJohn BoyegaOscar Isaac and even Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o.

daisy ridley star wars

"When you sign up for this, you're signing your life away, and you're keeping yourself from any other franchises out there," says an agent whose client is one of the stars of Episode VII. "They will not let you be in another franchise. They're going to be cranking out a new movie every year. These actors never get to read the script before signing on. They don't even know which [subsequent] one they are in. And then they become known for that role, and it's hard to see them in a Fault in Our Stars kind of movie."

Also, the pay is meager.

Sources say the newcomers can only command $65,000 to $125,000 for Episode VII, with sequel options exponentially greater. Still, agents will keep pursuing. Paradigm's Sarah Fargo, whose client, Domhnall Gleeson, was cast in Episode VII, sees only upside: "It secures all involved a place in film history and guarantees a huge global audience, enhancing an actor's marketability."

You'll be able to see the next 'Star Wars' trailer in front of the 'Avengers' sequel

If you didn't have enough reasons to see the next "Avengers" movie, here's one more: the second trailer for "Star Wars: Episode VII" will play in front of the anticipated sequel.

Both /film and Collider are reporting the second trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be attached to the "Avengers: Age of Ultron," which hits theaters May 1.

It seems like a no-brainer by Disney, which owns both Marvel and Lucasfilm. Put the trailer for one of the most-anticipated movies of the year in front of the other most-anticipated movie of the year.

The next "Star Wars" trailer is expected to debut during Star Wars Celebration, a yearly gathering for fans that is taking place this year at the Anaheim Convention Center from April 16-19.

That means we may not have to wait until May 1 to see the trailer online.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is in theaters December 18.

It's finally happening: At long, long last, "Star Wars" is going to be available online.

All six films in the series, from "The Phantom Menace" to "Return of the Jedi," are coming to numerous digital outlets. According to Variety, these include"iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Vudu, Xbox Video, PlayStation Store, and Verizon Fios."

USA Today reports that the recommended retail price of the films is $20 a pop— or $100 for the complete set. The movies will also come bundled with numerous bonus features included deleted scenes, bloopers, and voiceovers.

Interestingly, Disney has elected to keep "Star Wars" off streaming sites in favour of premium stand-alone downloads. It means rising powers in the industry like Netflix are missing out on what is guaranteed to be an extremely popular launch.

The launch comes in the run-up to the Dec. 18 release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the first new "Star Wars" feature film in 10 years as well as the first since Disney bought the franchise in 2012.

Here is the official trailer for the launch:
