The new 'Star Wars' films have a different opening fanfare — here's what it looks and sounds like

"Star Wars" fans everywhere will remember the drum roll and opening fanfare of the 20th Century Fox logo at the beginning of each film — but that's all gone now in the new "Star Wars" digital releases on sale Friday.

Because Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion, it seemed logical that future "Star Wars" films would no longer feature the 20th Century Fox logo and fanfare. But it turns out Disney has also removed it from all previous "Star Wars" films (except for the original 1977 "Star Wars," as 20th Century Fox still owns the distribution rights).

In place of the 20th Century Fox opening, Disney now begins each "Star Wars" episode with the Lucasfilm logo but has given it its own opening fanfare that is pretty close to the original's — there are still trumpets, but the classic drumroll is gone.

Here's what the new opening looks and sounds like, courtesy of Instagram user Matt Downham.

For comparison, here's what the original intro with the 20th Century Fox logo was like.

While some "Star Wars" fans may like how Disney and Lucasfilm are trying to preserve the tone and feel of the opening "Star Wars" experience, some older fans will most likely miss the iconic original.

The next film in the franchise, the JJ Abrams-directed "Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens," has finished filming and will hit theaters December 18.

All six of the existing "Star Wars" films are available for digital download starting Friday, and you can purchase them right here.

2016 could be a bad year for movie theaters

$

X-Men: Apocalypse

For a good while, 2016 was looking to be a tremendous opportunity for the theater industry to grow. Coming off some optimistic stock reports at the end of March, the collective business was looking at next year as being full of surefire tentpole hits galore, rising concessions sales and experimental aesthetic viewing options.

Yet, the latest forecast from Wall Street soothsayers seem to indicate that 2016 will be anything but superb.

According to an analysis appearing in Deadline, the exhibition industry may want to lower expectations for 2016.

If Eric Wold of investment firm, B. Riley & Co. is correct in his forecasting, then it looks like domestic box-office sales will actually drop by 5%, after just experiencing an encouraging 8% rise in 2015. In fact, the effect is already being felt as stocks for companies, Regal, AMC, Cinemark and Carmike are all down. Apparently, the cause of the current and impending decline has come down to delays of just two films: "Avatar 2" and "Star Wars: Episode VIII."

Wold initially gave 2016 a more optimistic forecast when supreme level tentpole sequels for the "Avatar" and "Star Wars" sequel trilogy were looking to end the year with a glass-shattering high note, with both films originally expected to hit in December.

Avatar movie

However, "Star Wars: Episode VIII" was never etched in stone for the year and its eventual release set for May of 2017 was not a huge surprise. However, "Avatar 2," the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 3D pastoral crowd-pleaser would recently implement a delay to 2017, due to the logistics of synchronizing three simultaneous sequels. Each of those films were estimated to separately add about $500-700 million to the collective numbers.

Suddenly, with the simple shift of dates, over $1 billion or 4-6% was taken from an annual figure that was grading on a curve.

The loss of those guaranteed blockbusters seems to leave little room for any further optimism for 2016.

That speculation would be the catalyst for unusually high stock prices for the theater companies after surprisingly high numbers for Quarter 1 of 2015.

Yet, the higher the rise, the bigger the potential fall.

alamo drafthouse

Aspects such as ever-rising ticket prices -- justified with luxury seating and the serving of alcohol -- have been cited as being a possible boon for the industry, but at the end of the day, the only thing that truly provides certainty to investors is the lineup of titles, which seems to have suffered a major setback with the loss of the two aforementioned mega-movies.

The idea that 2016 is already being preemptively painted with disappointment is an odd concept to grasp; especially when there’s just so many potential moneymakers on the menu that year such as "Deadpool,""Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,""Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2,""Star Trek 3,""Captain America: Civil War,""Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them" and "X-Men: Apocalypse," just to name a few.

batman vs superman batsuit batmobile

Plus, "Star Wars"-centric moviegoers will not be going hungry after having their appetites whetted with "The Force Awakens" in December 2015, since the first spinoff film, "Rogue One" will, in fact, be taking off in December 2016. Additionally, there is always the possibility of some sleeper hits making up for the projected deficit.

Of course, "possibilities" are probably not something in which investors place a great deal of priority regarding their decision-making, and the potential for mass divestiture could make for a rough year, despite the potential performances of those surefire 2016 hits.

For an industry that’s finding itself constantly battling the ever-changing mediums through which people digest content, the fact that the threshold between perceived success and failure for a particular year could depend on TWO movies, both of which are sequels, says a lot about the precarious line that is constantly being walked.

To commemorate the Star Wars Celebration event happening in Anaheim, California, Twitter announced in a blog post that it created three new "Star Wars" emojis.

Twitter partnered with Disney and Lucasfilm to create the three emojis: a stormtrooper, C3PO, and the new droid from "The Force Awakens," BB8.

These emojis, however, will not be available in your phone's emoji keyboard; to access them, you'll need a Twitter account. Each emoji can be created by tweeting out the name of the emoji as a hashtag: #Stormtrooper, #C3PO, and #BB8.

Once you tweet out the hashtag, the emojis will appear.

The emojis will show up only within Twitter and its mobile app for now, so you will not be able to copy and paste the emojis into iMessage.

Twitter says it will release more custom "Star Wars" emojis, "including iconic legacy characters and a handful of new characters."

The panel also had a few other surprise guests, including droids from the film R2-D2 and BB-8, but it was hard not to pay attention to Abrams' wrist every time he lifted his hand to speak into the microphone.

Bob Iger, chairman of the Walt Disney Company, which now owns the "Star Wars" franchise, was also sitting in the audience. Iger serves on Apple's Board of Directors, and he was good friends with co-founder Steve Jobs before his death. The companies are notoriously friendly with one another.

The second teaser trailer for the new "Star Wars" movie, "The Force Awakens," appears to confirm previously leaked details about the plot.

If you don't want anything spoiled for you, stop reading now.

For months, allegedly leaked plot details for "The Force Awakens" have said the story will focus on Luke Skywalker's original lightsaber, the one he lost when Darth Vader chopped off his hand in "Empire Strikes Back." The lightsaber fell down this deep pit:

darth sykwalkerBut the lightsaber actually has more meaning than that. It originally belonged to Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Anakin lost the lightsaber in "Revenge of the Sith" after losing a fight to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi gave the weapon to Luke in "A New Hope."

Now here's the real potential spoiler. Don't say we didn't warn you:

According to the leaked plot details that were first published on Badass Digest, Luke's old lightsaber makes its way through space and onto a planet where two of the new main characters Rey (played by Daisey Ridley) and Finn (played by John Boyega) find it. Rey and Finn recognize the lightsaber as a Jedi weapon and go on a search for Luke, who has been in hiding for several years.

Well, it looks like that leak may be pretty close to correct. In the new teaser trailer for "Force Awakens," we get a clear view of the lightsaber:

An explanation for everything you see in the latest 'Star Wars' trailer

$

0

The second teaser trailer for the new "Star Wars" movie, "The Force Awakens," is out.

It's short, but packed with a lot of stuff. Here's an explanation for everything you see in the new trailer.

We start out on this desert planet. A speeder rolls across the landscape. There's a crashed X-Wing in the foreground and a crumbling Star Destroyer in the background. At a "Star Wars" even Thursday, Daisy Ridley, a lead actress in the movie, said her character Rey starts out on a desert planet where she scavenges parts. This is probably that planet. It appears a lot of the old junk from the war between the Rebels and the Empire ended up here.

star wars episode vii trailer desert planet

Next, we see Darth Vader's scorched helmet. Remember, Luke Skywalker burned Darth Vader's body at the end of "Return of the Jedi." We hear Luke's voice say: "The Force is strong in my family..." This is also a line from "Return of the Jedi."

star wars episode VII trailer darth vader helmet

Then we see this mysterious cloaked figure touch R2-D2. He has a robotic hand. There's a good chance this is Luke. (Luke lost his hand in "The Empire Strikes Back.") The voiceover continues. "My father has it..."

r2 d2 star wars the force awakens

Luke continues: "I have it... my sister has it..." We see someone hand a lightsaber to someone else. This is the same lightsaber Luke lost when Darth Vader cut off his hand at the end of "The Empire Strikes Back." It's also the lightsaber Luke's father Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader had when he was younger. Obi-Wan Kenobi gave the lightsaber to Luke in "A New Hope."

lightsaber star wars force awakens

Finally, Luke's voiceover says: "You have that power too." It's unclear who he's talking to though. Could it be his son or daughter? Could it be someone else? We have no idea. If we had to speculate, we'd say Luke is talking to one of the three new main characters of the movie: Poe Dameron, Rey, or Finn. We see Poe Dameron in the next shot, yelling with glee as he pilots his X-Wing. All we know about Poe so far is that he's an X-Wing pilot with a mission from Princess Leia.

star wars episode vii trailer poe dameron

Next we see Kylo Ren, the villain, swinging his lightsaber. His lightsaber has three blades.

Then the trailer cuts to a quick shot of Rey (the woman on the left), Finn, and the droid BB8 running away from an explosion.

Then the trailer cuts to Kylo Ren again. This is the first time we see him from the front and get a clear view of his creepy mask. We don't know much at all about this character. The rumor is that Adam Driver plays him though.

Next, we see a bunch of stormtroopers at some sort of rally. It has a creepy Nazi vibe. It appears what remains of the Empire have reorganized and are up to no good.

During the event on Thursday, John Boyega, the actor who plays Finn, confirmed that Finn is a Stormtrooper when the movie begins. The trailer shows this scene of a TIE fighter blowing up a bunch of stormtroopers and their fighters.

Then we see Finn looking panicked. Speculation: Finn somehow has a change of heart about being an evil stormtrooper and escapes.

The next shot gives us a look at the new Star Destroyer design. These are the big ships the bad guys use.

Here's a crazy one. We see a stormtrooper in shiny metal armor. Stormtroopers usually wear white armor. We have no clue who this guy is or what's so special about him.

There's BB8 again. He's so cute. It's safe to say he'll be the comic relief of the film. It also looks like he's inside Han Solo's ship, the Millennium Falcon, in this shot.

We may see blood for the first time in a ‘Star Wars’ movie

A new trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens' was released Thursday afternoon.

While we've been poring over the new trailer, one of the things we caught is that it looks like Finn (John Boyega), who may be one of the main characters in the film, has a bloody hand mark on his stormtrooper helmet when he takes it off.

finn blood

The sight of blood in a "Star Wars" movie is chilling, and unprecedented.

Though there have been countless limbs chopped off by lightsabers, and a scene from "The Phantom Menace" where Darth Maul impaled Qui-Gon Jinn with his dual-bladed lightsaber, we’ve never seen a drop of blood.

The trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has got nerds and investors so excited that it added around $2 billion (£1.3 billion) on Disney's stock value.

It's that good.

When the new trailer dropped, Disney shares rose by 1%, which was enough to boost the stock by billions, to hit $108.30.

Although the stock closed 20 cents lower, Disney shares are hovering around 0.17% in after trading at $108.28.

The new teaser trailer for the first Star Wars film to be created under Disney's wing gives fans a glimpse of a landspeeder heading for a crashed Star Destroyer and a robotic hand touching R2-D2.

An unidentified voice also says, "the force is strong in my family," while we see the melted and bashed up helmet of Darth Vader. The voice, which people are guessing is potentially Luke Skywalker, says, "my father has it."

The pay off, though, is the return of Han Solo and Chewbacca. "Chewie," Han says, "we're home."
