We’re finally going to know what Obi-Wan Kenobi was doing before the original ‘Star Wars’

Star Wars ObiWan1

Many fans of “Star Wars” have always been curious what Obi-Wan Kenobi did all that time between “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope.” Finally a new comic book from Marvel will bring some clarity.

Following “Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith,” we found Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan McGregor) heading out alone after bringing twins Luke and Leia to safety from their father Anakin Skywalker — who by then had become Darth Vader.

The original film in the sage, “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope,” shows “Ben” Kenobi (played by Alec Guinness) as an elder Jedi living in seclusion on Tatooine until he’s thrust back into the Rebel cause after crossing paths with the adult Luke.

Kenobi dies by the hands of Vader in “A New Hope” and that looks to be where the comic book "Star Wars #7" begins (available July 8).

According to the book’s description on the Marvel site, Skywalker comes across Kenobi’s journals after returning to his home world of Tatooine following the events that occur in "A New Hope." The writings he uncovers are his master’s experience on the planet during “a time when injustice reigned.”

From the synopsis:

“As villainous scum runs rampant over the blistering sands, only a Jedi Master stands any hope of liberating the planet from the grasp of gangs, thieves and thugs. But would Ben risk everything to do what was right? Even if it meant revealing himself to those searching for his whereabouts?”

Here are some pages Marvel has previewed:

This shows Kenobi living an isolated existence on Tatooine.

Star Wars 7 Comics2

For the last year Marvel has been releasing a "Star Wars" series of comics that gives us insight into what happened to the main characters in the original trilogy following “Return of the Jedi.” #7 is a special one-off tale in the series focused solely on Kenobi.

Read up because all these tales may be of importance leading to the release of the next chapter in “Star Wars” lore, “The Force Awakens,” opening Dec. 18.

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord — who are behind hits “The Lego Movie,” the “21 Jump Street” films, and “The Last Man on Earth” — will direct a movie focused on a young Han Solo, according to The Hollywood Reporter

StarWars.com has confirmed the news and notes that the screenplay will be written by Lawrence Kasdan (wrote scripts for "Empire Strikes Back,""Return of the Jedi," and latest "Star Wars" film, "The Force Awarkens"). The film is slated for a May 25, 2018 release.

phil lord chris miller lego movieWith Miller and Lord on board, the "Star Wars" franchise has a highly coveted duo working for it. The pair have written, directed, and produced films that have collectively grossed over $1 billion worldwide

This is a nice rebound for the "Star Wars" spinoffs Disney is attempting to getting off the ground.

Last month, director Josh Trank dropped out of the spinoff he was directing, which was rumored to be Boba Fett origin story. A search for a director is still ongoing.

Harrison Ford returns as Solo in “The Force Awakens” when it hits theaters December 18.

The comedy duo directing the Han Solo 'Star Wars' movie are killing it in Hollywood right now

Tuesday afternoon news broke that the second "Star Wars" spinoff movie will focus around a young Han Solo.

The news was confirmed with a post on StarWars.com.

More interesting than the news of the film, which will be released May 2018, is the team who will be directing it.

If you're not familiar with the pair, you should be.

We've talked about the dynamic duo a bit before

Just about everything they touch turns to box-office and comedy gold.

Here's a quick list of the projects they've directed in the past:

"21 Jump Street"
"
22 Jump Street"
"Cloudy with a Chance
of Meatballs"
"The LEGO Movie"

What do all of these films have in common? They were break out successes with low costs but high gross intakes.

Here are three of their films:

chris miller phil lord box office

2014's "22 Jump Street" continued the trend grossing $331.3 million on an estimated $50 million budget. Miller and Lord are producing another sequel to that franchise.

As for "The LEGO Movie," while the two won't be back in the director's seat for the direct sequel, they will be producing not one, not two, but three "LEGO" movie followups ("The LEGO Batman Movie,""Ninjago," and "The LEGO Movie Sequel").

They're also the minds behind Fox's popular fall comedy "The Last Man on Earth."

Lord and Miller are basically the team everyone wants to be working with in Hollywood right now, so it's little surprise they were tapped for one of the six announced "Star Wars"-related films.

Plus, working with Lucasfilm will be a bit like return to old roots.

THR reports Miller was once an intern at Lucasfilm who wore a Stormtrooper costume for a special edition of one of the "Star Wars" films.

It sounds like the two will be right at home.

There's a brand new 'Star Wars' app in the app store today and fans should be pretty excited — it's a lot of fun for a free app.

The video above shows you all the cool stuff built inside.

Here's what the home screen looks like. As you can see, it gives you the latest 'Star Wars' news and your current weather, but puts it in the context of a 'Star Wars' planet. Apparently it's 61 degrees in Endor:

Star Wars app

There's a ton of things that you can do in the app, perhaps the most fun are the selfie and Jedi training pieces.

In Jedi training you battle against that little orb that shoots lasers at you, using your accelerometer, a la 'A New Hope.'

And in the selfie mode, you can pose with characters. It's a litte pointless, but it's free so what the heck? It's fun.

Why one man walked over 600 miles to Comic-Con in a 'Star Wars' costume

kevin doyle star wars stormtrooper

On Thursday night, 57-year-old Kevin Doyle finished his trek of over 600 miles from Petaluma, California, to San Diego, in a tribute to his late wife Eileen, who passed away due to pancreatic cancer in November 2012.

Both Kevin and Eileen were huge "Star Wars" fans. According to Kevin's fundraising page for his trek to Comic Con, Eileen loved to draw characters from "Star Wars," and she was "so popular at the Comic Book Shows... appearing as a guest artist, her fans were of all ages and would surround her tables with smiles on their face and full of conversation."

But just over a year after Eileen was diagnosed with metastatic adenocarcinoma in October 2011, Eileen passed away. Kevin says he still attends the comic book shows, "but not so much for myself but rather more to honor Eileen and the art she created and to keep her presence at the shows."

Kevin offered personal details on his fundraising page:

On November 7th of 2012 Eileen lost her battle with cancer. From that day forward the sun does not rise for me, everyday is November the 7th, my candle has burned out. Eileen was the most amazing person I ever knew, she was so beautiful, so thoughtful and she was loved by everyone who knew her. Eileen was the center of so many lives just as she was in my life but while our time together here on earth was so very short my devotion to her is life long and I can't imagine my life without her. So I honor her with every breath I take and I keep her spirit close to my heart as I continue on.

So nearly three years after his wife's death, with a big "Star Wars" movie coming later this year, Kevin set out for Comic Con 2015 in San Diego in true "Star Wars" style: He left Rancho Obi-Wan, a museum totally dedicated to the "Star Wars" franchise, on June 6, and walked roughly 645 miles, pushing a cart filled with camping gear, bandannas, coloring books and extra clothes, in an all-white stormtrooper outfit, while wearing a sign on his back: "I race in memory of Eileen Shige Doyle."

star wars stormtrooper kevin doyle

"It's just been one amazing experience," Kevin told Coast News.

During his trek, Kevin has also been raising awareness for "Eileen's Little Angels," a non-profit charity he's creating in honor of his wife. And he's getting plenty of attention: motorists, bicyclists, joggers and walkers have stopped to say hi to the stormtrooper, take a few pictures, and support Kevin on his journey.

star wars stormtrooper kevin doyle"For me, I haven't had my head around it just quite yet," Kevin said. "For me, it's just me walking to honor my wife, but then people are gathering and making it really special. And they're making it personal for them, which I hadn't accounted for that — that people would receive me in that way."

Now that Kevin's arrived safely in San Diego, he will enjoy Comic Con thanks to a generous weekend pass provided by Rancho Obi-Wan CEO and president Steve Sansweet. He's also got a free four-night stay at a local hotel thanks to his friends from the local 501st Legion, a volunteer organization for costume-wearers. And once Comic Con wraps up, Kevin will take an Amtrak train home instead of walking. But he says he hopes to leave time for himself during the return trip and beyond.

"We'll see what happens after this," Kevin told Coast News. "I kind of left this as an open book for me."

Don't expect to see a lot of images from the anticipated "Star Wars" panel at Comic-Con on social media.

The panel is apparently so secretive that security is going around telling fans no photos are allowed to be taken inside the room during the event.

 Via /film's Peter Sciretta:

That's unusual.

But, we do know that Disney is very keen about keeping footage from its panels under lockdown to prevent leaks.

How do you stop a room full of over 6,500 people from taking photos?

With night vision goggles, of course.

However, that hasn't stopped press members from tweeting out images of what's been appearing on screen during the anticipated panel.

Update: It sounds like fans were finally given permission to take some photos from the panel.

Still, everyone received a big speech on recording.

It’s the moment everyone who attending this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was waiting for — The “Star Wars” panel.

And it didn’t disappoint.

“The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams came with a lot of surprises up his sleeve. From bringing out cast members ranging from the new breed like John Boyega, Adam Drive, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, and Daisy Ridley to the legends from the original trilogy returning for the upcoming film like Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford.

Abrams even invited all of the six thousand-plus in attendance at Hall H to come join him to a “Star Wars” concert.

Check out everything that went down.

But the biggest highlight was the behind-the-scenes video package Abrams showed to the audience. And thank God for the Internet, because it’s already gone online.

And it is VERY revealing.

Abrams is going back to the pre-CGI "Star Wars" glory days and using a lot of practical effects. As you can see with this character featured in the video.

Kevin Smith sdcc 2015

It's probably not a good idea to have your Comic-Con panel after "Star Wars."

Director Kevin Smith learned that the hard way.

Smith was pumped to share his feelings on anything and everything from his AMC series "Comic Book Men" to the "Star Wars" panel that came before him during the 7:15 p.m. panel for his new movie "Yoga Hosers."

However, there was just one problem.

At the end of the "Star Wars" panel, everyone was invited and swept away to a secret "Star Wars" concert, leaving the normally packed Hall H feeling strangely empty.

Poor Kevin Smith!

Still, the panel wasn’t cancelled, and it wasn’t totally empty.

Those who attend saw a trailer for his new film and were able to ask Smith about anything from his vast knowledge of the Con and about his new movie.

One brave fan at San Diego Comic-Con cosplayed as everyone’s favorite "Star Wars" director to make fun of: George Lucas.

His spot-on parody inspired many passersby to stop and ask for photos, prompting him to respond, "Is it digital? Eh, we can fix it in post."

When we first spotted cosplayer Josh Robert Thompson outside the showroom floor, he wore a grey, slicked back wig, round glasses, and a prosthetic neck piece. He held a large sign that read "Gredo Shot First!" in one hand, and a Jar Jar Binks toy in the other.

For reference, here's what Lucas looks like in real life.

And here's a glimpse at the intense transformation Thompson, a professional comedian and voice actor, underwent in the make-up chair.

Rotating through a Rolodex of Lucas-inspired catchphrases, Thompson walked around the convention yelling to no one in particular, "Those are my movies, dammit."

And, "Where the hell is J.J.? I just want to ask him a question."

Thompson cosplayed as Lucas at Disney's "Star Wars" Celebration last spring and left as a celebrity of the community. A video capturing his parody went viral on YouTube.

He said the fan response has been more tame at Comic-Con.

Still, dozens are tweeting about their encounters with the divisive director.

Friday, the day of the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" panel, he attempted to find a fan with an admission wristband — a hot ticket item — who would be willing to hand it over.

"I couldn't get into my own panel!" he laughed.

We didn't get a new trailer for the upcoming "Star Wars" movie, "The Force Awakens," at Comic-Con this year, but we did get a look behind the scenes.

In a three-minute video released at Comic Con, Disney and Lucasfilm gave the world a look at behind-the-scenes footage from the new movie.

The main takeaway: "The Force Awakens" will rely on practical special effects and costumes instead of computer-generated (CG) effects. Critics of the last three prequel "Star Wars" movies hated that the movies relied so heavily on CG.

There are some other hidden gems in the video too. Let's break it down. But stop reading now if you're afraid of potential spoilers.

In a new behind-the-scenes video of the upcoming "Star Wars" movie, "The Force Awakens," we briefly get a look at a familiar face:

That's Admiral Ackbar. Ackbar was the leader of the Rebel military in the final battle scene of "Return of the Jedi." He's a relatively minor character with very little screen time, but he's most famous for belting "It's a trap!" when the Rebels realize the Empire lured them into a trap.

Here's the scene:

It's also a scene that has spawned meme after meme on the internet over the years.

There's a small chance this is just another alien that's the same species as Ackbar, but an earlier leak appears to show the character in the movie. There's a very good chance we'll get to see Ackbar again when "The Force Awakens" comes out on December 18.

During the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" panel at San Diego Comic-Con, fans didn't get to see any scenes or a new trailer for the film.

When will you be able to see a new trailer?

Abrams told the over 6,000 crowd in Hall H we'll have to wait a few months.

"Here's the thing. The truth is, we aren't ready to show you scenes from the movie or a new trailer," said Abrams. "We really want to wait and do the trailer later in the fall."
