These are the video games set to rake in major cash this holiday season

Every holiday season, dozens of games are released all around the same time with the goal of getting your dollars faster than the competition. "Call of Duty" and "Assassin's Creed" and a wide variety of other easily recognizable blockbuster franchises plan annual releases around the all important holiday season.

So, what are people most excited for in 2015? If YouTube plays are any indication – and we're betting they are – then the game people are most excited for this holiday is from a galaxy far, far away: "Star Wars Battlefront."

In fairness, the game is gorgeous and littered with staples of the franchise:

When we spoke with Patrick Bach, head of the studio making "Battlefront," back in June, he described the depths to which his studio is going to detail the world of "Battlefront." The studio is outright scanning all the props from the original trilogy, from the iconic lightsaber to the various versions of the Death Star. Here he is explaining as much:

Beyond "Battlefront," which has somewhere in the neighborhood of 18.5 million views, folks are very excited about the next entry in the long-running "Call of Duty" franchise. "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" takes both the second and fourth spot in the top five most viewed videos, with 15.9 and 11.2 million views (or a combined 27.1 million views, making it potentially the game people are most excited about in 2015).

Here's the reveal trailer that's garnered the most views:

With "Star Wars" and "Call of Duty" out of the way, the most interesting stats are tied to the other two games that made the top five: "Fallout 4" and the return of "Guitar Hero." When game publisher Bethesda Game Studios released the announcement trailer for "Fallout 4," it set the world on fire:

Games like "Call of Duty" and "Star Wars" are shoe-ins for this list, but games like "Fallout 4" and "Guitar Hero Live" aren't annualized sequels and aren't anywhere near as recognizable. Here's the full top five list, with numbers:

  1. Electronic Arts: Star Wars Battlefront Reveal Trailer, 18.5M views
  2. Activision: Official Call of Duty®: Black Ops III Reveal Trailer, 15.9M views
  3. Bethesda Softworks: Fallout 4 - Official Trailer, 14M views
  4. Activision: Official Call of Duty®: Black Ops III "Ember" Tease, 11.2M views
  5. Activision: Official Guitar Hero® Live Reveal Trailer, 7.1M views

Benicio del Toro might play the 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' villain

Benicio Del Toro

We're still months away from the hotly-anticipated "Star Wars: Episode VII," but the trickle of juicy rumors about its sequel is already underway.

According to The Wrap, the planned sequel might have found its villain in Academy Award-winning Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro. While just a rumor, it's an exciting one — Del Toro is a phenomenal actor, capable of portraying both Darth Vader-esque gravity and bizarre charisma at the drop of a hat.

If this rumor is true, though, it probably means Del Toro won't have much time to return to the role of The Collector from "Guardians of the Galaxy," and that would be kind of a shame. guardians of the galaxy benicio del toroEven if Del Toro doesn't take the role, it seems like Disney is working hard to secure top-tier talent for the next big "Star Wars" villain — Variety reports another award-winning actor, Joaquin Phoenix, has been pursued for the role.

Since "Episode VIII" isn't scheduled to premiere until May 26, 2017 — and there are two other"Star Wars" movies coming our way between now and then ("Episode VII" on December 18, 2015 and "Rogue One" on December 16, 2016) — it'll probably be some time before we get any official news.

jar jar binks star wars episode I

You might not know who Ahmed Best is, but you almost certainly have seen his most famous performance.

Best was the actor whose movements and voice brought the goofy alien Jar-Jar Binks to life in the "Star Wars" prequels.

Of course, this is probably a good thing for Best — Jar-Jar Binks is a character so universally hated that a video of someone dressing up as him getting beat up could conceivably be played for laughs. However, Best doesn't regret his time spent in one of the most beloved universes in all of pop culture, and it even sounds like playing Binks was a huge win for him, considering he may have beat Michael Jackson for the role.

In a long interview with Vice, Best elaborates on that surprising tidbit — one he first mentioned a year ago in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything".

"That's what George told me," Best told Vice, before mentioning an occasion where George Lucas introduced him to the pop star as "Jar-Jar". "I'm having a drink with George and I said, 'Why did you introduce me as Jar Jar?' He said, 'Well, Michael wanted to do the part but he wanted to do it in prosthetics and makeup like 'Thriller.'' George wanted to do it in CGI. My guess is ultimately Michael Jackson would have been bigger than the movie, and I don't think he wanted that."

The whole interview is worth a read — Best has certainly kept busy the past few years, writing, directing, and acting in several smaller projects. Read it here

JJ Abrams on Daily Show final

J.J. Abrams was on "The Daily Show" Thursday night promoting his new film "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" (which he produced), but all Jon Stewart wanted to do was get any info about Abrams' next directing effort, "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens."

Stewart wasn't successful, but Abrams was willing to open up about the on-set injury Harrison Ford suffered.

"There was a hydraulic door that went down, he was pushed down, and his ankle went 90 degrees," Abrams told Stewart.

The actor broke his ankle, and Abrams described to Stewart how he rushed to Ford's aid.

"I'm trying to lift him up, because that's the kind of guy I am," he said. "I'm trying to lift this door and I hear a pop [in my back] and I go, 'Oh, that's weird.' So I go to the doctor a couple of days alter and he goes, 'Oh, you have a broken back.'"

The doctor informed Abrams that he had broken his L4 in his spine. But the director continued working on "Star Wars."

"A few months later I'm still wearing this really silly back brace under my shirt, nobody knows, I didn't tell anybody. Harrison Ford from across the stage sprints to me faster than I will ever run, and he's like 'Hey, J.J.!'"

Abrams said of Ford, "The guy is like a real life superhero."

The new Star Wars movie could rake in a whopping $2.2 billion worldwide (DIS)

x-wing pilot star wars episode vii trailer

The new Star Wars movie could bring in a lot of money.

In fact, about $2.2 billion, according to some analysts.

"As expectations begin to ramp/get framed for 'Star Wars' we look at how to benchmark the film compared to 'Avatar' and some of the other recent global blockbusters," Stifel analysts Benjamin Mogil and Kevin Lee Hon Siong wrote in a note to clients. "In aggregate, we believe that the film can gross around $2.2bn globally."

As a reference point, that means that "The Force Awakens" could literally eclipse the GDP of 22 countries.

Mogil and Siong suggest that there are two major tailwinds for this movie. First, the number of IMAX screens has nearly doubled, and the number of 3D screens has nearly quadrupled since 2009. And second, international markets like China, Russia, and Latin America have seen "significant" screen and box office growth.

However, there is one wildcard factor: the movie's release date in China.

"There is a strong inverse correlation in Chinese box office performance from the release date duration between the global data and the Chinese data, owing to piracy," Mogil and Siong wrote.

In any case, we'll have to wait until "The Force Awakens" opens on December 18 to see how many people rush to see it worldwide.

The film is being produced by Lucasfilm, a subsidiary of Disney.

Mogil and Siong have a buy-rating on Disney with a $130 price target.

Oscar Isaac is one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood right now.

Often compared to 1970s movie stars like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, Isaac has become known in the past few years for churning out dark, brilliant performances in "Drive", "Inside Llewyn Davis", and 2014's "A Most Violent Year".

For Oscar Isaac, 2015 will be a year for the record books.

After an excellent performance in sci-fi indie "Ex Machina," he will also star in HBO miniseries "Show Me a Hero", and a little movie called "Star Wars". Plus, with a role in an "X-Men" sequel on the horizon, it looks like Oscar Isaac is truly about to become a huge movie star.

Look, if we've said it once, we've said it a thousand times: this November's "Star Wars" game, "Star Wars Battlefront," is a love letter to fans of the series.

It features "Star Wars" icons (like Darth Vader) in iconic "Star Wars" locations (like planet Hoth) doing iconic things (like using The Force to lift an enemy off the ground and choke them to death). The latest reveal for "Star Wars Battlefront" is what's known as "Fighter Squadron Mode"– that's just the technical term for "the mode where you get to fight in totally sweet space fighters."

In said mode, you'll get to pilot TIE fighters, X-Wings, and – yes, seriously – the Millennium Falcon. Allow us to walk your through the trailer.

The trailer starts off innocently enough with a bunch of rebel-piloted X-Wing fighters preparing for battle.

Next up, we get a look at the Imperial dogfighters. You'll spot TIE fighters in here, as well as TIE Interceptors. There's also a look inside an Interceptor, from the position of a gunner taking down a Rebel X-Wing.

Here's how the fastest spaceships from all the different sci-fi universes stack up

star wars episode 7 millennium falcon

Han Solo is convinced that the Millennium Falcon is the fastest ship in the galaxy — and he's right if you're only counting the "Star Wars" universe.

But what about compared to spaceships in other sci-fi universes?

This awesome Fat Wallet graphic has the answer. It ranks spaceships featured in popular sci-fi stories from slowest to fastest.

It's divided between ships that are slower than the speed of light and ships that are faster than the speed of light. A proton flying through the tunnel of the Large Hadron Collider at nearly the speed of light is a fun Easter Egg that separates the two sections.

In the first half, the ships that travel slower than the speed of light are ranked by g-force: the force on an object exerted by acceleration. It's a pretty comprehensive list that includes TIE Fighters like the ones that attack Luke while he's trying to blow up the Death Star in "Star Wars," Serenity from the beloved (and much-missed) TV show "Firefly," the escape pod that Superman uses to flee his home planet Krypton before it explodes, and even some real life NASA spacecraft like Voyager 1.

The second half includes ships that travel faster than the speed of light and they are ranked by c's, where one c is equal to the speed of light (about 186,282 miles per second). Of course all of the ships in this second half are fictional since no one has figured out how to make a real "Star Trek" warp drive yet.

So which ship is the fastest? Doctor Who's awesome time-traveling TARDIS is a close runner up (the physics of which are surprisingly not entirely science fiction), but anyone who's read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" won't be surprised by the winner. Sorry Han.

1,000 studio workers behind 'Revenge of the Sith' gathered to watch this epic Darth Vader scene get shot

revenge of the sith vader

"Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakes" is coming out December 18.

That's a long time for a "Star Wars" fan to wait. And it's been a while since the last "Star Wars" movie came out in 2008. So to hold you over, let's relive the last film in the prequel, "Revenge of the Sith," specifically the last 15 minutes of the film, a moment Star Wars fans waited decades to witness and producers pulled out all the stops to pull off.

(For more "Star Wars" recaps, check out the on-going series, "Star Wars" Rewind).

2005’s “Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith” would mark the final film in the saga George Lucas would be involved in. “Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones” were fine, but for the most part “Star Wars” fans were left feeling unsatisfied. "Episode III" would hopefully give fans the answers they had been wanting for decades, and some redemption for Lucas.

“Revenge of the Sith” had a mature feel compared to the previous two films and captured the horrific fall of the Jedi. In it, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) finds himself moving closer to the dark side as Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) — who we come to learn is the Emperor, Darth Sidious — convinces Skywalker that he’s the greatest Jedi of them all. This leads to Skywalker leading the rise of the Empire.

But it’s the final 15 minutes of the film that set it apart from the others in the prequel.

In it, Anakin loses the light saber battle against Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and is left for dead as he burns alive on the volcanic planet of Mustafar.

revenge of the sith 6The Emperor saves Anakin and what follows is something “Star Wars” fans waited decades to see — Anakin turns into Darth Vader.

Industrial Light and Magic’s Rob Coleman was the animation director on all of the “Star Wars” prequels and he is on the commentary for the Blu-ray version of “Revenge of the Sith.” He said the Darth Vader sequence was one he’d “been thinking about since I was 13 years old.”

Visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett described the idea behind the setting for the construction of Anakin into Vader in the commentary: “We wanted to get that interrogation look with this ridiculously hot top light,” he said. “Uncomfortable and very unsympathetic.”

revenge of the sithThen there was showcasing the iconic Vader mask and helmet.

revenge of the sith 2“I love this idea of getting inside the mask,” Guyett said in the commentary. “And the other touch was seeing him breath for the first time. I remember we did the shot and George came back and said, ‘Just disturb the smoke enough above the mouth piece so you can see him breath for the first time.”

revenge of the sith 7But perhaps the most memorable moment was the filming of Vader when his construction is complete. James Earl Jones, who voiced Vader in the original trilogy, returned to do the dialogue in this scene. And according to producer Rick McCallum on the commentary, Christensen was inside the Vader costume for the scene.

“I went to go pick up Hayden in a golf cart [to bring him to the set] and he insisted to play this,” said McCallum. “He wanted to be in the suit.”

The scene was shot 10 days before principal photography on “Revenge of the Sith” wrapped, and McCallum recalls the incredible sight when he got to the set with Christensen.

“There were about a thousand people on the stage,” he said. “Everyone from the studio. We opened the stage doors and I let four hundred to five hundred people in, as many as we could get in. People were sitting on the floor. George did a couple of takes, Hayden got off [the set], and everyone just came up and touched him."

revenge of the sith 8"Most of these people honestly had gotten into the film business because of ‘Star Wars,’" said McCallum. "It was just a great day.”

Though Lucas took a lot of heat on the internet following the release of the prequels as many thought they didn’t hold up to the original trilogy, it’s hard to argue that the ending of “Revenge of the Sith” is completely satisfying.

Along with seeing the creation of Darth Vader, we see the birth of Luke and Leia Skywalker, C-3PO and R2-D2 being handed over to Captain Antilles who erases their memory in order to protect the whereabouts of the twins, and how the twins are split up to protect them from Vader ever finding them, following the death of Padmé (Natalie Portman) during child birth.

The film concludes with Kenobi giving Luke to his uncle and aunt on Tatooine, where 20 years later the Jedi master and future apprentice would find each other in “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.”

revenge of the sith luke

“I always wanted to end the movie on the twin suns, it was such a strong image in ‘Episode IV,’” said Lucas in the commentary.

a new hope lukeAbout the ending to “Sith,” Lucas added, “There’s something very satisfying about having all the little pieces wrapped up.”

We’re just over four months before the premiere of “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens,” and every bit of footage that we are teased with just builds our excitement.

Like this 30 second TV spot released in South Korea for the movie, which is now on the YouTube channel for Star Wars Korea.

The opening reveals a shot of the First Order, which was formed following the Empire’s defeat at the end of “Return of the Jedi.”

It looks like they are growing in numbers as a raising crane shot shows a mass number of Stormtroopers and rows of TIE Fighters alongside them. With the voiceover, “There’s been an awakening…” (which we heard before in the US trailers).

the force awakens First OrderLooking a little closer, it’s likely that General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), who oversees the First Order, is addressing the platoons. With Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), among the higher-ranking officers behind Hux.

the_force_awakens_First_Order taggedThe setting could also possibly be Starkiller Base, which is the primary post for the First Order.

Sometimes trailers and TV spots show footage that ends up not appearing in the final version of the movie. Regardless, what we see from this, and the other footage that has been released, is that director JJ Abrams is certainly intending to show us striking visuals that touch on what we remember from the original trilogy  but with a fresher feel.

There’s one new shot in a Korean ‘Star Wars’ trailer fans are obsessively decoding

If you're looking for even a quick glimpse at some new footage from the upcoming "Star Wars" movie, "The Force Awakens," you'll want to watch the latest TV spot running in Korea:

It's basically a mashup of the two teaser trailers that have already been released, but the opening shot is new.

If you're worried about spoilers or even speculation about the next movie, stop reading now.

The new shot shows some shadowy figures standing over an army of storm troopers in a Nazi-like rally:

It's the rear angle from this shot, which we saw in the last "Force Awakens" trailer:

The big question? Who's the person in the dark cloak standing in the front?

star wars force awakens korean tv spot supreme leader

According to materials shared by Lucasfilm and Disney about the new film, "The Force Awakens" takes place about 30 years after "Return of the Jedi." Even though the Rebels appeared to defeat the Empire in "Return of the Jedi," remnants of the Empire continued to thrive in parts of the galaxy. Those remnants will be called The First Order in the next movie.

Early rumors suggest The First Order is run by a guy called Supreme Leader Snoke, which many believe will be played by Andy Serkis. It's already been confirmed that Serkis will be in "The Force Awakens," but it hasn't been officially announced who he'll play.

Andy-SerkisIf the rumors are true, Serkis will play the role of the new emperor and use Kylo Ren, a new Sith lord we saw in the teaser trailers, as his henchman. It'd be very similar to the dynamic in the original trilogy between Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader.

NOW WATCH: We just learned a bunch of new details about what's coming up in the next 'Star Wars' movie

The one question that convinced JJ Abrams to direct the new 'Star Wars' movie

$

JJ Abrams Star Wars

J.J. Abrams is a lifelong "Star Wars" fan, so the opportunity to direct "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is like a dream come true.

However, it still took a little convincing and questioning before he decided to get fully involved.

According to a lengthy interview with Abrams in Entertainment Weekly, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy first approached the director while he was working on 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness." At the time, Abrams, who had just successfully rebooted one sci-fi franchise, was looking to make something original again. However, that didn't stop Kennedy from pursuing him.

jj abrams kathleen kennedy star wars concert

In order to persuade him, she decided to ask him an important question.

“In the context of talking about story and laying out what we were thinking, I said one thing to him,” Kathleen Kennedy told EW. “‘Who is Luke Skywalker?’”

This did the trick, as Abrams decided he really needed to know this answer for himself.

“He said, ‘Oh my God, I just got the chills. I’m in,’” Kennedy said. “I mean, it really was almost that quickly.”

The Force Awakens Star Wars Luke

Abrams' wife can also be credited for giving him a final nudge to get on board.

“You rarely get a chance to be involved in something that you would typically be an audience for. Katie, my wife, said, ‘If you want to do this and you don’t, you’re going to regret this.’ It was really about being willing to take that leap, and jump into the possibilities of what these characters are doing, and where they are.” Abrams told EW.

Plot details for "The Force Awakens" are still vague, and we've barely gotten a good glimpse at Skywalker yet. However, what is known is that this will be a different Luke than the one from the original trilogy. The Luke Skywalker at the end of "Return of the Jedi" was different than the one at the start of "A New Hope," and will likely be different from the one we see in "The Force Awakens."

"The Force Awakens" will be out in theaters on December 18.

Here's the extreme measure taken to prevent the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' script from leaking

john boyega star wars episode 7

There is probably no movie in production right now more secretive than "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." It is, easily, the most-anticipated film of 2015, with eager fans readily waiting to analyze every new detail to come from the movie's actors and filmmakers.

For this reason, security on set is — put mildly — next-level. Actor Oscar Isaac, who plays X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron in the film, admitted this much in interviews months ago when he told Yahoo Movies the conditions in which he had to read the script under.

Now, we're getting a few more details about "The Force Awakens" courtesy of a Fall movie blowout issue of Entertainment Weekly. An accompanying photo on EW.com shows yet another security measure: Director J.J. Abrams with screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan going over the script on what looks like a Star Destroyer set.

What's of note here are the dark red script pages, which EW reporter and "Star Wars" expert Anthony Breznican notes are a security measure to prevent copying — since dark red pages on a black and white photocopier will print out black, rendering copied pages unreadable.

There are doubtless many more security measures in place to ensure that the only information to come out of "The Force Awakens" set is the sort that Disney and Lucasfilm want us to see — measures that would probably be less useful the more we know about them.

Regardless, they'll only be necessary for a few more months — "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is scheduled to hit theaters December 18, 2015.

"Star Wars" is in theaters in December, and though we've gotten two teaser trailers for the film, there's still so much we don't know about it.

Now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have our best look at "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The magazine's previewed several items from its fall movie issue online including a breakdown of the new villain, an interview with director JJ Abrams, and a photo gallery with some new imagery.

It's a lot to unpack.

See what we just learned about "Star Wars: The Force Awakens":

We know why Finn (John Boyega) is by himself at the beginning of the first trailer.

When the first “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” trailer premiered, we were introduced to a lone, unmasked stormtrooper in the desert. It turns out he’s a runaway.

C-3P0 now has a mysterious red arm.

Earlier this year, an image of an alleged soda can spotted in Mexico appeared online showing off C-3P0 with a different colored arm.

Now an official photo from Lucasfilm confirms this. We don't know why the droid's arm is red, or if it's a temporary thing. You can see the photo here

We finally know who's lightsaber this is — it's Anakin Skywalker's.

In the first big teaser, we saw someone hand an older model lightsaber to another character.

EW reports Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) somehow ends up with Darth Vader's lightsaber, the one passed on to Luke which was lost at the end of "The Empire Strikes Back."
