Sarco Plank Star Wars The Force Awakens

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is just a few months away, but there's still a lot we don't know about the movie.

Sure, we don't have an official plot synopsis, but we haven't even met all of the characters.

StarWars.com has quietly been adding more characters from the upcoming movie to its internal database.

They don't show up on the site unless you search for them or do a manual Google search.

A bunch of eagle-eyed fans on Reddit have rounded up a bunch of them leading up to the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" December 18.

Let’s take a look at everyone!

We wrote a little bit about the Guavian Enforcers when the new "Star Wars" merchandise came out early September. The character will be released as one of the Black Series collector's toys at an upcoming date.

The description on the box reads as follows:

“The security soldiers of the Guavian Gang wear high impact armor that makes them stand out among other deadly criminals.”

StarWars.com describes the character as part of a Guavian Death Gang.

Via StarWars.com:

"A scavenger and trader who scours frontier worlds for riches, Sarco Plank must wear a specialized mask that keeps his native atmosphere circulating through his alien lungs."

The character will also be getting his own toy which will be released at a later date.

Mark Hamill didn't 'nearly fall to his death' on the new ’Star Wars’ set

Earlier this week, The Sunday Times published a story claiming "Star Wars" actor Mark Hamill nearly fell to his death while filming "The Force Awakens."

The UK outlet claimed the 63-year-old actor slipped during a shoot for the movie in Ireland months back. According to the report, an eyewitness saw Hamill saved by a guide before he fell from a climb on Skellig Michael, an island located off the southwest coast of Ireland.

The story was then picked up by the New York Daily News Monday.

There's just one problem.

When Hamill finally got wind of it Thursday morning, he didn't hold back on Twitter:

He went on to say that he wasn't hurt at all on set.

Clearly, the force is pretty strong with Hamill.

Dark Vader 51-31 Nixon Watch

On May 4 (Star Wars Day), watch and accessories brand Nixon announced its collaboration with Disney and Lucas Films to create a sleek "Star Wars"-themed line.

Available on Nixon's website starting September 18, the STAR WARS | Nixon Collection features $55 small leather goods, a backpack, and watches named after the Dark Side.

For those who want to splurge, the limited edition Darth Vader watch is priced at a $2,500.

Back in May, we noted Nixon’s plan to modify pre-existing watch styles in addition to creating new designs with galactic elements that extend beyond “Star Wars” branding.

Nixon prides itself on style and attention to detail, which is evident throughout the collection.

The "Stormtropper" watch mimics the uniforms worn by the soldiers of the Galactic Empire, with black representing the full body glove and white acting as the protective armor.

The monochromatic "Imperial Pilot" watch nods the all-black suits of Empire pilots.

The small leather goods follow suit with all-black and black-accented color schemes. While the "Star Wars" influence is prominent, you won't be be embarrassed to wear these accessories to the office.

2015 is "Star Wars" year, y'all. Every year is, actually, now that "Star Wars" is an annualized film franchise. But this year is especially "Star Wars-y" because it marks both J.J. Abrams' directorial debut in the "Star Wars" film series and also the rebirth of the "Star Wars Battlefront" game series.

As such, it's a great year for unexpected, somewhat ridiculous collector's items. We present exhibit one: the $130 "Star Wars Battlefront Deluxe Edition with Han Solo Fridge."

This is "Star Wars Battlefront." It's very pretty.

This is Luke Skywalker and his father/antagonist Darth Vader. You've probably heard of them.

Breakdown of the fastest spaceships in the history of science fiction

star wars episode 7 millennium falcon

Han Solo is convinced that the Millennium Falcon is the fastest ship in the galaxy — and he's right if you're only counting the "Star Wars" universe.

But what about compared to spaceships in other sci-fi universes?

This awesome Fat Wallet graphic has the answer. It ranks spaceships featured in popular sci-fi stories from slowest to fastest.

It's divided between ships that are slower than the speed of light and ships that are faster than the speed of light. A proton flying through the tunnel of the Large Hadron Collider at nearly the speed of light is a fun Easter Egg that separates the two sections.

In the first half, the ships that travel slower than the speed of light are ranked by g-force: the force on an object exerted by acceleration. It's a pretty comprehensive list that includes TIE Fighters like the ones that attack Luke while he's trying to blow up the Death Star in "Star Wars," Serenity from the beloved (and much-missed) TV show "Firefly," the escape pod that Superman uses to flee his home planet Krypton before it explodes, and even some real life NASA spacecraft like Voyager 1.

The second half includes ships that travel faster than the speed of light and they are ranked by c's, where one c is equal to the speed of light (about 186,282 miles per second). Of course all of the ships in this second half are fictional since no one has figured out how to make a real "Star Trek" warp drive yet.

So which ship is the fastest? Doctor Who's awesome time-traveling TARDIS is a close runner up (the physics of which are surprisingly not entirely science fiction), but anyone who's read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" won't be surprised by the winner. Sorry Han.

THEN & NOW: The original 'Star Wars' cast 38 years later

The first movie installment of "Star Wars" premiered in 1977, and anticipation for each new sequel and prequel has snowballed ever since.

Now, a seventh movie, "The Force Awakens" is being released — and it'll include the beloved original main characters played by Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill, as well as other role reprisals from other fan favorites. It's kicking off a hot streak of six new "Star Wars" movies planned for release over the next five years.

So what's everybody from the original three "Star Wars" movies been up to in the past 38 years? Scroll through to find out.

THEN: Harrison Ford was working as a carpenter to supplement his flailing acting career. But after "Star Wars: A New Hope" came out, he rocketed to stardom.

He knew director George Lucas because they worked together on "American Graffiti." Ford was helping stand in for screen tests while other actors auditioned. To his surprise, Lucas offered him the part without even telling him he was up for it.

Source

NOW: Ford is a bona fide A-list movie star.

The first three "Star Wars" films put Ford on the map. Since then, he starred in the "Indiana Jones" movie franchise and plenty of other films from the '80s until today. He recently returned to the action genre in "The Expendables" and its sequel.

Most importantly, though, he's reprising his role as Han Solo in December. Fans around the world lost it when he appeared at the end of an early "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" teaser to say to his Wookiee sidekick, "Chewie, we're home."

THEN: Carrie Fisher had had some small roles, but was predominantly known as the daughter of singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds until being cast in "Star Wars: A New Hope."

In her feature film debut, she had a small but memorable role as a rambunctious teen in the Warren Beatty vehicle "Shampoo" in 1975. She landed "Star Wars" two years later.

Today, the Facebook News Feed on the web and Android is getting support for 360-degree videos, essentially giving you virtual worlds to explore. Apple's iOS will get the feature later.

Basically, they work like normal videos, but you can click and drag to look all around while it plays. It's just one step closer to the virtual reality future that Facebook is pushing for with its Oculus VR business

To demonstrate, Facebook signed on partners like Discovery, LeBron James, and GoPro to show off how 360-degree videos can put you in the action.

But for my money, the coolest demo comes from "Star Wars," which lets you take a virtual tour of the new planet Jakku from "The Force Awakens"— crashed Imperial Star Destroyers and all.

You'll need to be using Google's Chrome web browser to experience it, as Safari isn't supported at the moment.

Take a look:

It's not hard to imagine that eventually, these 360-degree videos will be viewable from Facebook's long-in-the-works Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

Facebook, Sony, HTC, and others are betting big that virtual reality is the next major way we'll all communicate with each other online. This is our first glimpse at what that might actually look like in real life.

10 things you didn’t know about the background characters in the iconic 'Star Wars' cantina scene

cantina

In continuation of our on-going series, “Star Wars” Rewind, in which we look back on all of the movies from the saga leading up to “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens” (out December 18), we’ve now hit the one that started it all, “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.”

George Lucas’ sci-fi destiny was forged when the film opened in May of 1977 and essentially launched the summer blockbuster.

One moment in the film that’s always fun to go back and analyze is when Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) enter the Mos Eisley cantina in search of a pilot to take them to Alderaan. There they meet Han Solo (Harrison Ford), so obviously going into the cantina was worthwhile.

But Kenobi wasn’t joking when he told Luke that in Mos Eisley, “You’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.”

Let’s look back on ten interesting characters who were in the cantina the day Luke and Obi-Wan walked in.

Watch out, this place can be a little rough.

SEE ALSO: George Lucas was scared to death to shoot this epic scene in 'Attack of the Clones'

1. Ackmena The Bartender

The nightshift at the cantina was overseen by Ackmena. We saw her in the now infamous "Star Wars Holiday Special" played by "Golden Girls" great Bea Arthur. Legend has it the day Luke and Obi-Wan were in the cantina she was in the backroom.

Ackmena was more liked at the cantina than the bartender during the day...

2. Wuher The Bartender

This gruff fellow is known for not allowing droids in the establishment and takes cover when a blaster is drawn.

3. BoShek

This Corellian smuggler (who dabbled a little in The Force) is distinctly known for introducing Obi-Wan to the Millennium Falcon’s first mate, Chewbacca. But Obi-Wan and Luke would have been in good hands if BoShek decided to take them.

He set a new record for the Kessel Run before his meeting with the Jedi that day. Taking bragging rights from Solo and Chewbacca, who were the previous record holders. Though Solo still boasted his feat when he met Luke and Obi-Wan.

A hot rumor about a former 'Star Wars' actor has fueled a crazy fan theory about Darth Vader

anakin skywalker star wars

Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and others from the original "Star Wars" trilogy are reprising their characters in this December's "The Force Awakens."

But will any of the newer characters from the later trilogy (the often criticized prequel), be making an appearance?

That's the rumor going around!

Fan site Makingstarwars.net says it heard Hayden Christensen may be appearing in 2017’s untitled “Star Wars: Episode VIII.” Christensen played a young Anakin Skywalker in the prequel trilogy as we watched him turn into the dark lord Darth Vader.

Via Making Star Wars:

“A team in the U.K. are soon heading to the U.S. to begin training Hayden Christensen for a Star Wars: Episode VIII appearance of some sort.”

Is Darth Vader back?

star wars anakin skywalker

Not so fast.

While the fan site has a good track record with rumors, take that bit of news with a grain of salt.

Even the site seems pretty wary of the news.

Since Vader was killed off at the end of “Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi,” played by the much older Sebastian Shaw, it would be kind of difficult to see where Christensen would fit into the film unless we were looking at some sort of flashback sequence.

However, if Christensen were to return, it would add credence to the other rumor they report: that Darth Vader could appear in the first “Star Wars” spinoff “Rogue One.”

Again, via Making Star Wars:

The most I have heard at this juncture is that a fully operational Darth Vader chest piece along with  the helmet made it to the creature shop for the next film. The lights on the chest piece work and everything. Here’s where I get hesitant about it: There were not several of them, just one seen by a source and mentioned by another. I believe that part of the info is correct that a suit made it to the props area. Does that mean it is in the film? Not entirely.

Read into that however much you want, but this has led fans to an even crazier theory — what if Vader was resurrected?

That sounds ridiculous, right?

Let's think about it.

We know Vader is definitely tied to the storyline of “The Force Awakens." We've seen his old, melted helmet in a teaser trailer.

darth vader helmet star wars the force awakens

We also know Vader serves as the inspiration for the new villainous Kylo Ren in December’s film, so much so that Ren has been described as "obsessed" with the Dark Lord.

This is where those two ideas merge.

A lot of fans are thinking Kylo Ren wants to resurrect Vader — especially since it seems like he's after Luke's lightsaber, which was originally Anakin's

Crazy, right?

Even if Anakin was resurrected, he didn't die as the great Vader who ruled the galaxy. He turned against the dark side of the force to aid his son Luke. He was very at peace with himself, and a very different person than the one it appears Kylo Ren is worshipping.

Will that happen? Who knows. At the least, it's a fun rumor to think about at the moment.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is in theaters December 18.

A ‘Star Wars’ sticker may have just revealed another huge character in ‘The Force Awakens’

$

Fans have been scouring “Star Wars” toys since their release September 4 for clues hinting at what to expect in the new movie, “The Force Awakens.”

While we now know what villain Kylo Ren sounds like and have an idea of some of the other characters we’ll see, we definitely haven’t seen every character in the film, yet.

Over the weekend, I headed to a New Jersey mall with my younger brother and his girlfriend. They're cosplaying at New York Comic Con and were looking for a few items to polish off their "Suicide Squad"-themed outfits.

We headed into a Spencers and they had a bunch of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" items. Oddly, everything was marked at 25% off even though "The Force Awakens" merchandise hit shelves on September 4.

Among the mugs and toys was a “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” sticker book. I flipped through it out of curiosity, and was surprised to find a character we haven’t seen in any marketing or trailers yet.

Take a look. Can you spot the new character?

star wars the force awakens sticker

Who is that?

star wars force awakens pip andersen.JPG

He kind of looks like a young Han Solo, right?

star wars luke leia han solo

That makes sense. They're working on a Han Solo spin-off movie, which will probably take a look at Solo in his younger days.

But he can’t be young Solo.

There's another sticker which shows him joined up with the two new lead characters, Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega).

rey chewbacca finn pip andersen.JPGHe looks pretty important considering he's seen posing with the leads of the film.

So who is he?

Our best guess is that he's the character being played by Pip Andersen, who we haven't heard anything about yet.

Looks pretty spot on, for a sticker anyway.

pip andersen

In May, Andersen was seen sporting a longer hairstyle in a video interview.

pip andersen hair

Who's Pip Andersen?

The parkour artist and freerunner known as Piptrix was cast in "The Force Awakens"back in July 2014 along with actress Crystal Clarke.

We haven't heard much of anything about his role in the next film since then.

Who we think he'll play

Our best guess is that he may be some sort of Jedi Knight.

As a trained freerunner, Andersen certainly has the abilities of moving like one.

parkour pip andersen 2011pip andersen parkour

In an interview with Red Carpet News TV in May, Andersen said he worked a lot with Harrison Ford, Ridley, and Boyega on set.

"Harrison was probably the only one [out of the old cast] that I worked with on set as well as kind of talked to more," said Andersen. "Me, Daisy [Ridley], and John [Boyega] all kind of were around each other much more than I was with the more experienced guys."

We know early on in the film Ridley and Boyega's characters Rey and Finn, respectively, will cross paths with Han Solo and Chewbacca aboard the Millennium Falcon from teaser trailers and toys.

Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon

If we know Andersen was working with the trio, perhaps he'll be aboard the ship as well.

If that's the case, maybe he could even be related to Solo. As we noted, he certainly looks like a young Solo.

Could he be playing Han and Leia's son? In the expanded "Star Wars" universe, they have three children — Jaina, Jacen, and Anakin — following the events of "Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi"; however, since Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, any books and series following "Jedi"have been erased from canon

At the very least, Andersen certainly teased that his role may be pretty important.

"Putting on the costume was a surreal thing, like seeing yourself as one of the characters that people are going to fall in love with," Andersen told Red Carpet News TV.

Maybe the film's next trailer will shed some light on the mystery character.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be in theaters December 18, 2015.

NASA wants to name parts of Pluto’s moon after Star Wars

Pluto's moon Charon might become a nerd's paradise if NASA has anything to say about it.

It's already settled that Pluto's landscape features must have names that come from underworld mythology like its rocky region called "Cthulu regio" (from H.P. Lovecraft's writing) and its dark spot called "Balrog macula" (from "Lord of the Rings").

But the door is wide open for Charon's craters, mountains, and plains, and NASA really went to geek town on its proposed names. They reference popular sci-fi works like "Star Wars,""2001: A Space Odyssey," and "Star Trek."

They aren't official yet, but we really hope these are the names that get approved. Keep scrolling to see Charon's features and which sci-fi stories they reference.

(NASA even has a spreadsheet that explains all the names if you want more details.)

The craters Vader, Skywalker and Leia Organa are named after the "Star Wars" characters. The Vader crater, of course, is darker than the other two.

And if you have "Star Wars" represented, you can't leave out "Star Trek." So the Spock, Kirk, Sulu, and Uhura craters are sprinkled over the Vulcan plane.

Neil deGrasse Tyson thinks 'Star Trek' is better than 'Star Wars' — but he prefers this show over them both

Neil deGrasse Tyson 1

Neil deGrasse Tyson is choosing sides in entertainment's space race between "Star Trek" and "Star Wars"– on scientific grounds, of course.

"I'm 'Star Wars' fluent, but I'm a bigger 'Trek' fan," Tyson, 56, told Rolling Stone as excitement around the next "Star Wars" chapter, "The Force Awakens," climbs.

He continued, "There's a promise of actual science going on in 'Star Trek'— but not so much in 'Star Wars.' I won't be first in line to see the new 'Star Wars.' I can wait until it's on video! But I applaud the fact that it has people thinking about space."

Tyson, who hosts National Geographic Channel's "Star Talk," also explained which TV shows he preferred during his youth. This time, "Star Trek" doesn't fare as well.

"I was a mild 'Star Trek' fan, but my favorite show then and now is 'The Twilight Zone,' especially the episode called 'The Invaders,'" he said.

The 4 'Star Wars' toys every kid will want this holiday

star wars toys

With "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hitting theaters this December, "Star Wars" toys are expected to be huge this holiday season.

Last week, I headed over to the TTPM (Toys, Tots, Pets, and More) holiday showcase where the popular toy site shows off which products they predict will be big hits with kids come Christmastime.

It was little surprise that "Star Wars" made the list.

Out of the over 100 "Star Wars" toys reviewed by TTPM, there were four items toy experts predicted will be the biggest sellers this holiday season.

Keep scrolling to see which "Star Wars" toys kids will have on their wish lists.

1. Sphero's $150 BB-8 droid

This was one of the most in-demand toys when Disney debuted its line of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" toys Sept. 4.

The small ball droid by Colorado-based startup Sphero is essentially a miniature replica of the new character who will be featured in "The Force Awakens" this December.

We've checked it out and it's really cool. You control the BB-8 through an app on your smartphone or tablet. Not only does the little droid move up to five miles per hour, but he's incredibly responsive to the controls. Check it out here and here.

If you can't get your hands on Sphero's BB-8, or find the price a little too steep, Hasbro has its own version of the rolling BB-8 available for $79.99. We've tried out both. And while the Hasbro version also looks spot on, it definitely has a harder time moving around smoothly on all surfaces. Sphero's BB-8 is the clear winner, and worth every penny if you're looking for a working replica of the droid.

You can buy Sphero's BB-8 droid here. You can check out Hasbro's version of the toy here.

2. Hasbro's $200 Black Series Kylo Ren Force FX Lightsaber

This is a pretty pricey lightsaber, and I have a hard time picturing parents shelling out $200 for a replica lightsaber to be used as a toy.

I've tried out the $200 version, and it's a bit weighty for a kid. While it's an awesome replica of Kylo Ren's lightsaber down to the crackling lightsaber sounds and detailed design, I'd consider this more of a collector's item.

I definitely wouldn't trust a kid swinging this thing around. If you were hit with it, it would definitely hurt.

If you're looking for a more affordable three-pronged lightsaber, I'd recommend one of Hasbro's other models of the same lightsaber. There's a $29.99 deluxe electronic lightsaber which also lights up and makes sounds. A $12.99 version extendable lightsaber is available, too, but that one doesn't light up or make any sounds.

Check out the $200 lightsaber here

3. LEGO's $149.99 1,329-piece Millennium Falcon playset.

Seriously, what kid wouldn't want to build their own Millennium Falcon?

Again, the drawback here is the $150 price tag.

But look at the pros:

Not only does the ship open up, but you're also getting a lot of "The Force Awakens" characters in this set: Rey, Finn, BB-8, and a silver-haired Harrison Ford. This is the only LEGO set so far where you can get him.

You can check out LEGO's Millennium Falcon set here

For an alternative, you can check out some of the other LEGO sets available here. There are many of them!

The most famous bikini in film history has a new owner.

Last week, the so-called Princess Leia slave bikini, which was worn by actress Carrie Fisher in 1983's "Return of the Jedi," was sold at an auction for $96,000.

This one:

star wars princess leia slave outfit

Here's what it looks like today:

princess leia slave costume bikiniProfiles in History, which held the auction, did not release the name of the winning bidder.

Here's some background on the bikini from "Star Wars" lore.

In "Return of the Jedi," Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, and the rest of the crew infiltrate Jabba the Hutt's palace in an effort to rescue Han Solo, who was captured by Darth Vader and frozen in carbonite. Vader gave Solo to the bounty hunter Boba Fett, who in turn sold him to Jabba.

But Leia gets caught and Jabba makes her his new slave. (He killed his previous slave by feeding her to a giant monster.) Eventually, Luke comes to the rescue and Leia is able to use her chains to choke Jabba to death in the ensuing chaos.

The bikini lived on after "Return of the Jedi" in pop culture. For example, an entire episode of "Friends" is dedicated to the fact that men fantasize about sleeping with a woman dressed in Leia's bikini.

Rachel fulfills the fantasy for Ross at the end of the episode:friends rachel in leia bikini costume

It is unclear what the winning bidder plans to do with the new bikini.

Carrie Fisher will return as Princess Leia in the upcoming "Star Wars" movie, "The Force Awakens," on December 18.

We're looking for people of all ages from those who grew up with the original trilogy starting in 1977 before the special editions were released (and rereleased) to younger fans who joined the rebellion years later.

If the following sounds like you or someone you know, you may fit the bill.

You have the biggest collection of "Star Wars" toys, Legos, or Kenner action figures.

You've read everything in "Star Wars" canon and would be able to tell someone how to get to Cloud City from the Dagobah system.

You're likely to bid on Carrie Fisher's "Return of the Jedi" slave outfit — or maybe you did and are the proud owner!

You head to "Star Wars" Celebration annually.

You know how to wield a lightsaber and aren't afraid to show off your skills.

You've lined up/camped out, dressed in costume to be among the first to see a "Star Wars" movie (or all of them!) in theaters.

That's a character playing as Luke Skywalker taking down an AT-ST Imperial walker after jumping 20 feet in the air. Insane. There's a thread of people going nuts over the clip on Reddit.

There have been dozens of "Star Wars" video games over the years, going back as far as the original Nintendo Entertainment System (and beyond, to the Atari 2600). Ever since the original "Star Wars" film secured the hearts and minds of millions of adoring fans the world over back in 1977, those same fans have wanted to play as their favorite characters from the space opera.

Those characters have never looked better than in 2015's "Star Wars Battlefront," a new game that takes everyone's favorite pieces of the "Star Wars" universe and mashes them all together into a massive, online multiplayer love letter to fans of the sci-fi franchise. Here's just one quick example of the game in action:

But beyond crazy on-screen action starring Darth Vader, the game's got some of the most gorgeous "Star Wars" art we've ever seen. Join us below for a smattering of what we've seen thus far.

The very first screen that comes up when the game loads is a close-up shot of a storm trooper looking haggard:

The loading screens are where the game's most gorgeous art appears. Like this amazing shot of bounty hunter / fan favorite Boba Fett:

Or this great shot of a standalone AT-ST, menacingly aimed at the player:
